Given to a friend who loves it...

This book is the makeup artist's dream come true. Are you a lover of the Kevin Aucoin style of doing understated (yet dramatically beautiful) make-up? You can check out his work on Google. This book is for you! He will take you step by step through all the how to's of creating the "look". Great information here about working with ethnic skin, and the challenges of doing makeup for a natural look on darker skin.
He was such a wonderful artist, I had the opportunity of working with him in his younger years, he is sorely missed. His technique was that of a true artist (much like Way Bandy)....a face painter....so unlike the artists of today who ride the hype train to success. I also recommend "Kevyn Aucoin: A Beautiful Life—The Success, Struggles, and Beauty Secrets of a Legendary Makeup Artist" if you'd like to know more about him as a person.

This is Where You Start

Making Faces is a starting point for many that are curious about makeup, myself included. Kevyn's advise and guidance is used by many of today's MUAs and Internet makeup gurus. Some probably don't even know their source.
With that said, people with a grasp of how to do makeup can take a pass. This book covers basics very well. However, if you need inspiration for say, your 1990s costume or a tutorial done by picture you should grab this book. I'm still blown away by his Marilyn Monroe look for Priscilla Presley. He had a guide on how to contour your face a whole generation before it was appreciated.
Making Faces is one of those makeup tomes you need to pass on to the next budding makeup enthusiast. I gave my copy to my niece once Kevyn taught me the ways of contouring and perfect smoky eye shadow. Now that the 90s are back, Kevyn's photos for his makeup looks are suddenly trendy again.

This book really brought me back

This is the book my first theatre teacher used to show us how to apply stage makeup and contouring. I think it's very effective for beginners, but those who have been doing makeup and learned from online guides will know most of the information.
I agree some of his looks are crazy, like wet eyelids or pencil thin eyebrows haha, but overall it's a really great guide, and I love owning it. I once tried all the looks at the same time and jokingly called it the 'Kesha' (not ragging on her or anyone, I thought it was fun).
I adore that he didn't use brand names! I have everything from Chanticaille to Mac to UD to drug store to department store and some they don't even make anymore, i can tell you, it doesn't matter that much. He doesn't cover eyelid primer, which is a necessity for me (usually Urban Decay or NARS), but I think that may be due to it's early publication.
A great guide for teenagers or girls just starting out maybe on the way to college, would recommend.
