Unlike traditional information systems which work by issuing requests and waiting for responses, event-driven systems are designed to process events as they occur, allowing the system to observe, react dynamically, and issue personalized data depending on the recipient and situation.

Event Processing in Action introduces the major concepts of event-driven architectures and shows how to use, design, and build event processing systems and applications. Written for working software architects and developers, the book looks at practical examples and provides an in-depth explanation of their architecture and implementation. Since patterns connect the events that occur in any system, the book also presents common event-driven patterns and explains how to detect and implement them. Throughout the book, readers follow a comprehensive use case that incorporates all event processing programming styles in practice today.

Event Processing in Theory
By Eric Jain
Unlike other books in Manning's "in action" series, this book, with its thorough review of concepts and terminology, appears to be geared more towards "enterprise architects" whose job it is to evaluate vendor's offerings in this space -- and towards vendors who need to ensure they've got their buzzwords and checklist features right. The authors describe their approach as top-down, but there isn't much middle, and the bottom consists of a few example queries and screen shots from various systems.

I had the opportunity to review the manuscript for the book, Event Processing in Action by Etzion and Niblett, now published as a book by Manning Publications Co. Event Processing is an emerging area of interest in both business and technology circles. However, because it is new, there are different approaches and different terminology. This book brings it all together eloquently.

While at first glance the book may appear to be highly technical, it does an outstanding job explaining the concepts of Event Processing for the casual or non-technical reader. In fact, the book appeals, by an early example, to anyone who has ever stood impatiently in line for a cup of coffee. Using that example, the book immediately draws the reader to the importance and complexity of event-based processing. The book explores other real -world examples of every-day activities such as medical emergencies, banking activities, and airport activities.

As easy as it is to read, the book nevertheless also serves as a practical reference for the technical audience. Through its top-down approach to event processing, it defines terminology carefully, includes a comprehensive case study, and offers solutions in various programming languages and options.

Section 1 consists of two chapters, which serve as introductions for all readers. Section 2 contains a chapter dedicated to each important concept behind event processing: events, event producers, event consumers, networks, context, and event pattern matching. While the program languages and facilities in these chapters are extremely useful to the technical reader, they do not distract from the concepts for the non-technical reader. Section 3 covers implementation issues such as software engineering concerns. Section 4 is a summary and authors' vision for the future.

An easy and comprehensive read, this book is the authoritative reference for demystifying the complex, important, and future of event processing.

Excellent title for anyone interested in Event Processing
By jpi
Disclosure: I received a review copy of Event Processing in Action from Manning.

Event processing in Action was an interesting and detailed book definitely worth reading. It is extremely detail oriented and hit all of my expectations - defining the basics of event processing, explaining why event processing would be beneficial to an organization like mine and providing advice based on real world experience - and I feel informed enough to implement and event processing system in my organization. Moreover, the book changed my mentality in terms of how such systems are architected - I think in most organizations there are numerous candidates for event processing systems that were structured in a less natural and less efficient manner. By reading this title, perhaps we can avoid some of the same mistakes the future - or at least have enough information at hand to make appropriate decisions. I strongly recommend this title for anyone new to or interested in Event Processing.
