As I write this, I am sitting at my desk (it's 4:30PM) and my last nurse aide student is completing the performance part of the Red Cross Nurse Aide test. He already passed the written this AM. I tell you this because my student is severely dyslexic. When he enrolled in my class, I had serious concerns about his disability. The last thing I want to do is frustrate a student. I suggested the audio book for our text, Nursing Assistant Care, and he bought it. He listened to every chapter before I taught it and was able to take notes along with the class. He listened again when he got home to clarify. He used all the review material and practice tests faithfully. He came to me on several occasions thanking me for the book. I am now passing those (and my) thanks to you!! Without this audio book, my student would not have succeeded. As of 5 minutes ago, he is a Certified Nursing Assistant!!! Thank you, Hartman! I am a customer forever!!

Worth the price

Required textbook for CNA course my child is taking. Her opinion is that it's well laid out, includes color photos for reference and has an adequate table of contents to assist with navigating. She's only had the book for one week but claims she's learning a lot. Also, excellent shipping time. Received the book four days earlier than projected. A major bonus when working on a deadline before course starts.

About the Author

Mark Edward Soper has been working with PCs since the days of the IBM PC/XT and AT as a salesperson, technology advisor, consultant, experimenter, and technology writer and content creator. Since 1992, he has taught thousands of students across the country how to repair, manage, and troubleshoot the hardware, software, operating systems, and firmware inside their PCs. He has created many versions of his experimental computer known as “FrankenPC” for this and previous books. Mark earned his CompTIA A+ Certification in 1999 and has written five other A+ Certification books covering previous versions of the A+ Certification exams for Pearson imprints. Mark is also the creator of Building and Repairing PCs (Que Video).

Mark has contributed to many editions of Upgrading and Repairing PCs, working on the 11th through 18th and 20th through 22nd editions; co-authored Upgrading and Repairing Networks, Fifth Edition; and has written two books about digital photography, Easy Digital Cameras and The Shot Doctor: The Amateur’s Guide to Taking Great Digital Photos.

In addition, Mark has written Easy Windows 10, Easy Windows 8.1, Easy Windows 8, Easy Microsoft Windows 7, and Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows 7 in 10 Minutes. He also wrote two books about Windows Vista: Maximum PC Microsoft Windows Vista Exposed and Unleashing Microsoft Windows Vista Media Center.

Given to a friend who loves it...

This book is the makeup artist's dream come true. Are you a lover of the Kevin Aucoin style of doing understated (yet dramatically beautiful) make-up? You can check out his work on Google. This book is for you! He will take you step by step through all the how to's of creating the "look". Great information here about working with ethnic skin, and the challenges of doing makeup for a natural look on darker skin.

He was such a wonderful artist, I had the opportunity of working with him in his younger years, he is sorely missed. His technique was that of a true artist (much like Way Bandy)....a face painter....so unlike the artists of today who ride the hype train to success. I also recommend "Kevyn Aucoin: A Beautiful Life—The Success, Struggles, and Beauty Secrets of a Legendary Makeup Artist" if you'd like to know more about him as a person.

This is Where You Start

Making Faces is a starting point for many that are curious about makeup, myself included. Kevyn's advise and guidance is used by many of today's MUAs and Internet makeup gurus. Some probably don't even know their source.

With that said, people with a grasp of how to do makeup can take a pass. This book covers basics very well. However, if you need inspiration for say, your 1990s costume or a tutorial done by picture you should grab this book. I'm still blown away by his Marilyn Monroe look for Priscilla Presley. He had a guide on how to contour your face a whole generation before it was appreciated.

Making Faces is one of those makeup tomes you need to pass on to the next budding makeup enthusiast. I gave my copy to my niece once Kevyn taught me the ways of contouring and perfect smoky eye shadow. Now that the 90s are back, Kevyn's photos for his makeup looks are suddenly trendy again.

This book really brought me back

This is the book my first theatre teacher used to show us how to apply stage makeup and contouring. I think it's very effective for beginners, but those who have been doing makeup and learned from online guides will know most of the information.

I agree some of his looks are crazy, like wet eyelids or pencil thin eyebrows haha, but overall it's a really great guide, and I love owning it. I once tried all the looks at the same time and jokingly called it the 'Kesha' (not ragging on her or anyone, I thought it was fun).

I adore that he didn't use brand names! I have everything from Chanticaille to Mac to UD to drug store to department store and some they don't even make anymore, i can tell you, it doesn't matter that much. He doesn't cover eyelid primer, which is a necessity for me (usually Urban Decay or NARS), but I think that may be due to it's early publication.

A great guide for teenagers or girls just starting out maybe on the way to college, would recommend.

Unhappy families are unhappy in their own way...

..unless addiction is involved. Sheff captures that mixture of hope and despair living in each parent whose child has gone into the dark, deep hole of addiction. His book is full of joy and tragedy. Love and relief, ambiguity and disgust and dislike. And guilt, so much guilt. Guilt for feeling all the love and hope and despair. In this book Sheff touches on pretty much everything parents feel (or at least this parent) when their child goes over to the dark side.

Very well written, spellbinding in its own way, the reader will have a hard time staying neutral to the players in this personal tragedy. Sheff admits that for years people have given well-meaning advice and criticism. You should have done this. Why on earth did you do that. Until and unless you've had to deal with HIS issues, there is no right or wrong. Sheff did the best he could at the time with the information he had, at that static moment in time. No parent can say they haven't done the same thing. And who knows if the result would have been the same after all?

Siblings, family, partners and friends have their own experiences with their addict, but a parent is a bit different. As Sheff points out, we are the soft place for them to fall, the most influential people in their lives until we send them off into the world and their tiny circle widens to include day care workers, teachers, coaches and friends. As parents we hand them over, so to speak, and our sphere of influence diminishes as the years go by- as it should. The mistake Sheff made, and he freely admits it, is that he was under the impression that he had armed his child with the tools he needed to succeed, and when that seemed to fail, Sheff began to question what exactly he had done to contribute to that failure.

It is common if not universal among the parents of addicted children to blame their parenting. Other people will also look first to the home environment. Sheff takes a long hard look at himself and his parenting, and still has a hard time forgiving himself for mistakes he made. But who doesn't make mistakes? Conversely, does that mean parents get to take the credit for every good thing their child does? Is it right for a parent to take credit for the successes or failures of their child? And failure and success are rather subjective anyhow. Sheff does not really address this, although he tries hard to forgive himself, which he should. I really hope he has succeeded.

What struck a deep note with me was how accurately he describes the sea change in parenting expectations... one day you are thrilled to see an A in spelling and almost the next you wake up grateful that the police haven't knocked on your door telling you that your child is dead.

I have not read Nic Sheff's book yet, I want to leave a little break between the two. But I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever been touched by addiction of any kind. It won't do a thing to prevent addiction but it may give you a gleam of insight into the silent and desperate life of the friend, co-worker or relative who has a child in trouble.

worth the read!

I learned a lot from reading this book. I have a teenager and a college age child and was curious what might be some warning signs that I might not notice... and this book definitely opened my eyes and gave me a good understanding of the drug (meth) and how a "normal" kid could find themselves caught up in this horrible drug. Because of the book I've had good discussions with my kids. Bottom line is DON'T GET NEAR THE STUFF! Additionally, I'm really glad that the authors' son, Nic, wrote a book as well. Very helpful reading both and I am appreciative for the Sheff family for being so honest and sharing their experience/journey.

a MUST read...we are not alone

It took me over 2 weeks to read this amazing book and I'm normally a 1-2 day per book person. Why? Because my own pain walking in David's shoes was so intense that I had to step away and could only take it in small doses. This has been our life for 20 years and I know there are specifics David didn't share/ couldn't share because it is so horrifying to know the reality of everything your child is doing to obtain these drugs of choice. It was comforting in some strange way to be inside David's head and know that I'm not alone in thinking these things and more. It is also appalling that in this great country - which gives away everywhere - that it is so incredibly difficult to find help and rehabs for those with mental health issues or addictions. The daily battle is overwhelming. There should not be such a battle/war to find reputable, effective programs for help. 28 day programs - a load of crap. Nothing of true, long lasting value can be accomplished in 28 day programs. I still remember sitting in our first family session at a program - 20 years ago. Thinking there is no way possible OUR child, OUR family would ever be back here doing this again. We were a good family, had raised great kids and we would handle this and fix it during this one go round. I lost track of the rehabs, the programs, the jails, the prisons a long, long time ago. I also learned a lot along the way about the impacts of things birth parents did to impact a beautiful girls destiny. Not to absolve our own part of this - all parents make mistakes along the way. But just because you received the gift of this child while they were young - it doesn't remove damage done in the womb and even as a small infant. And that terrifies me for the two beautiful baby boys that my child had and gave up to some other loving family. I worry about the predisposition to addiction those beautiful boys have been sentenced to. You learn....constantly and painfully. David captures this in his amazing book. I am debating with myself now about sharing it with my daughter so perhaps she can finally see inside our minds and hearts and understand the depths of the fear, the anger, the pain, the destruction. I want to believe that might help her/us heal if she could ever understand this isn't all about her and her pain. God help me but it does come to a place where you are glad they are locked up somewhere because at least they are safe and for a little while you can sleep....you aren't waiting for a dreaded call to come with horrid news.....or waiting for calls to come just to know they are alive. You do truly begin to dread and hate a ringing phone. Enough already. This is a true must read for any family or person that knows and loves an addict. It would be a good read for those that don't - just for their understanding and education about how this plague of addiction affects people they interact with every day and yet may not even know the hell they are living. Thank you for writing this David. I felt like I was holding my breath throughout waiting to know that Nic was still alive and was making it. I'll be reading Nic's own story next.

About the Author

Ginny Wacker Guido has been active in legal and ethical issues in nursing for the past 30 years. She developed an interest in this area of nursing when teaching undergraduate nursing students in Houston, Texas, and this excitement for further knowledge and understanding of this content area encouraged her to pursue a doctor of jurisprudence degree. Over the years, she has attended multiple workshops and conferences, updating and expanding her knowledge base regarding both the legal and ethical aspects of nursing practice. Dr Guido also continues to publish and present on legal and ethical issues with special emphasis in a variety of clinical practice settings. She remains active in nursing education and is currently employed as the Regional Director for Nursing and Assistant Dean, College of Nursing, Washington State University Vancouver.

Good book missing pages needed for assignment

This is being used as a textbook for a graduate class. It is written on an interesting manner with lots of case studies.

Now that I am at the end of the course, I see the last 2 chapters are missing. Others complained chapter 3 was missing, which I have, but chapters 21 & 22 are missing. I bought 2 versions, the 2014 and the 2010 both have the same missing chapters. i need these chapters to complete my assignment.

Encouragement & Enlightenment from a Masterful & Insightful Teacher

Elder David A. Bednar is such a masterful and insightful teacher! Before I read this book, I thought I had a decent understanding of the Atonement of the Savior Jesus Christ. Within the first chapter, I was amazed at how much more the Spirit taught me about the purpose and strength that comes from the Atonement and how to apply that to encourage me to stretch a little farther and try a little harder with the knowledge that I will succeed. I liked how Elder Bednar stressed specific words in scripture verses that I'd skimmed over before, giving emphasis which helped me truly ponder what my Heavenly Father expects of me and helps me to become. The quotes and scriptures, images and stories Elder Bednar shares inspired me, and now that I know there are two other books, I will be looking for them as well. The book itself would have been enough, but I love the feature of the QR codes that link to video discussions.

This state-of-the-art survey illustrates the results of the Aniketos – Secure and Trustworthy Composite Services – project (funded under the EU 7th Research Framework Programme). The papers included in the book describe the solutions developed during the 4-year project to establish and maintain trustworthiness and secure behavior in a constantly changing service environment. They provide service developers and providers with a secure service development framework that includes methods, tools, and security services supporting the design-time creation and run-time composition of secure dynamic services, where both the services and the threats are evolving. The 16 chapters are organized in the following thematic sections: state of the art of secure and trustworthy composite services; the Aniketos platform; design-time support framework; run-time support framework; and case studies and evaluation.
