The Definitive Analysis of Captain America

I should disclose that I read this book in proof and wrote a blurb on the jacket. My colleague Robert Jewett and I have been thinking and writing about Captain America for several decades. This is the definitive book about the Captain's character and its many mutations, including the last decade in which Cap dropped out of the War on Terror and became a critic of of administration military policy. Stevens has worked from a vast database of comics texts, letters to the editors, and films. If you believe that you understand Captain America fully, you owe it to yourself to read this book and likely feel some embarrassment at what you didn't know. Stevens writes in a very steady, appreciative but critical voice. A model book.

Insightful and challenging

I began reading this book because my teens are currently hooked on Cap and all the Avengers. I've never been a comic book fan, but I found it very interesting to read about the history of comics and especially how Captain America has evolved over time to reflect cultural values. This book is not light reading for the casually interested, though. I found the research presented to be insightful and challenging. Perhaps if I were more versed in the comic book genre, I would have understood more easily. Overall, though, a very interesting read.

Popular culture as reflection of societal change

Captain America, Masculinity, and Violence by J. Richard Stevens is a comprehensive academic, yet very readable, look at the changing ideas on masculinity and violence as presented through the character of Captain America.

Very well researched and documented, this book takes Captain America through his various changes and looks closely at what they reflect about society's views as well as how it might also help to develop those views. From conservative to progressive, from anonymous to known, Cap's character always offers a view into what constitutes, in each era, a moral type of justice and even patriotism, though in some ways the patriotism becomes tempered with some reality rather than the rose-colored glasses of many types of patriotism.

Whether you're a fan of Captain America or primarily interested in the intersection of popular culture with issues of gender, violence, politics and ethics, this book has something for you.

Great book, but semiconductor devices need update...

An excellent book on the optics side, with good theoretical derivations on many topics. However, I wish that the sections on semiconductor devices were more extensively updated in one of these new editions, especially since Yariv's group at CalTech were pioneers in the field of semiconductor lasers, and it would be well worth knowing what insights he can give on modern devices. For example, there is no discussion of strained quantum wells that I could find. The book has an excellent discussion of Bragg mirrors, and some discussion of their use in DFB lasers and VCSELs, but nothing about resonant cavity LEDs or resonant cavity photodiodes (or even just plain vanilla LEDs). The description of APDs is one of the few covered areas that is not rigorous. Of course, the book is a reasonable size, and so cannot contain everything, but I get the feeling that the semiconductor device areas were hardly touched from earlier editions. However, most of what Yariv and Yeh do cover, they do so in a detailed manner, so this is still a good book to have around. Chapters:

This text struggles to relate the mathematics to the theory. A nice supplement to a solid theory source, but lacking as a stand alone teaching tool is how I would describe this book.

A pretty good grad photonics book

This text is good for a moderately advanced exposure of photonics at the graduate level. It covers a lot of different topics and gives you everything you need to derive equations yourself. The problems I have with this text are as follows:

1) Quite a few typographical errors - if you are deriving everything yourself you will find most of these and it isn't much trouble

2) There are some blatant errors which are reused again in examples and derivations - one I remember off hand was the coupling coefficient in sinusoidal gratings but I haven't looked at this in a long time

3) Things are explained okay but not as clear as many other photonics texts in my opinion

4) The index is okay at best

I believe this book is a fairly standard graduate textbook for a first exposure on photonics which it serves pretty well if you are careful when reading it. I would not recommend this as a reference book. A better reference book at the same level or a bit more advanced would be "Physics of Photonic Devices" by Chuang.

Tracing "Usher"

Dennis R. Perry and Carl H. Sederholm attempt to trace the contributions of Edgar Allan Poe to major works of horror and Gothic in America, arguing that Poe is not merely an influence on all American Gothic after him, but that he "is the dominant ghost haunting modern American horror" (18). Perry and Sederholm suggest this by focusing on Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," and its direct influence on several texts, which include Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," James's The Turn of the Screw, Lovecraft's fiction, Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, Bloch's Psycho, Levin's Rosemary's Baby, and King's The Shining.
Perry and Sederholm's preface and first chapter explain the purpose of their study and their reasoning behind focusing on Poe's "House of Usher." They claim that Poe studies have largely overlooked Poe's influence on Gothic and horror writers and that because of Poe's varied styles and broad influence on American fiction, "he can easily be marginalized in studies of genres in which he should be acknowledged as a key player" ("Preface" vii). They define Poe's work broadly enough to encompass genres like Gothic and horror, arguing that his work is much more varied than most studies suggest, and they focus on "House of Usher" to narrow the scope of their study, positing that this story is Poe's masterpiece and serves as an appropriate model for studying elements of Gothic and horror.
Poe's Gothic traditions are well noted in the first chapter, as Perry and Sederholm claim that Poe's "House of Usher" is the "culmination of the Gothic literary tradition," noting Ann Radcliffe and Horace Walpole as the forerunners of genre (8). Defining the characteristics of the genre and hinting at how it overlaps with genres like horror or ghost stories gives the book a solid foundation for tracking the tradition, its culmination in Poe, and then Poe's continuous "haunting" influence on the American Gothic.
Though Perry and Sederholm are thorough in examining the "Usher Formula" and the elements that characterize it, the explanation may be difficult to grasp for someone unfamiliar with a wide scope of American literature and the criticism that they refer to (like Freud and Todorov). Nevertheless, this explanation serves as a good context as the following chapters mark the influence of Poe throughout the Gothic and horror traditions in American literature and popular culture. As the book goes on, some prior knowledge of the texts in discussion would definitely aid in understanding the points of influence that Perry and Sederholm examine as the texts are discussed in detail with only occasional summary provided.
What makes this book interesting and difficult at the same time is the number of goals that Perry and Sederholm set out to accomplish. Primarily, they examine Poe's place in the literary conventions of Gothic and horror and trace the influence of "House of Usher." They also use this conversation to promote an understanding of what makes Poe's "House of Usher" so significant in culture (as they explain its significance in the world of literary criticism). Other goals include accounting "specifically for the overlooked significance of 'The Fall of the House of Usher'" and contributing "to the ongoing recent discussion of the aesthetics and cultural significance of Gothic literature and its branches: terror, horror, romance, and the weird tale" (4, 11). Though all of these goals are accomplished to some degree, the scope of the study seems too broad, even though Perry and Sederholm attempt to narrow it significantly by focusing on American texts and the influence of only one of Poe's tales.
