About the Author
Dr. Jason Fung completed medical school at the University of Toronto and a fellowship in nephrology at the University of California. He founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program in Toronto that provides a unique treatment focus for type 2 diabetes and obesity. Dr. Fung lives in Toronto.

Decades in medicine...why didn't anyone teach us about THIS!!!

I am a PA with decades of experience with diabetes and it's ill effects. I have watched through my career, type 2 diabetics listen to medical advice and never get any better. When my daughter, who was a gestational diabetic with her first pregnancy had a fasting blood glucose of 288 mg/dl, it became personal for me. They gave her the usual Metformin script and sent her on her way. Knowing that these meds do nothing to cure the disease and that it would only head her to a life on insulin and further weight gain I asked her not to take the meds, stop all carbs for the moment and let me do some research. That was when I came across Dr. Fung's lectures on the internet. As someone who has been studying holistic medicine for 30 years it made complete sense to me.
What makes this book and his lectures so valuable, is that he approaches everything from a medical model and shows why modern medicine is getting it all wrong.
He explains the process of glucose metabolism in a way I feel most lay people can understand. It's important for every overweight or type 2 diabetic to understand this process to better understand what they have been doing to their bodies...and unfortunately what we in medicine have been doing to their bodies.
What was most valuable to me was him quoting studies that are considered standards in the field of medicine...not studies on rats or studies that have 15 subjects...but studies conducted over years with thousands of participants...like the Frammingham study or the NHANES study. I had seen these studies in the most prestigious medical journals like JAMA...funny how some of the aspects of the studies that he cites just weren't included or stressed in the outcomes.
After going over all the metabolism...the studies on why reducing calories and increasing exercise just doesn't work...he presents a series of plans to reverse (yes I said reverse) type 2 diabetes. There are several options and one is bound to be workable for most people.
My daughter has a hectic schedule and always complained about diets that required 3 or more meals a day...she doesn't like to eat breakfast and has no time to schedule multiple meals. The four hour intermittent fasting plan worked great for her. After an initial adjustment of about 2 days (headaches which were not relieved by increasing her sodium, my guess was sugar withdrawl), she had no hunger, no cravings and felt great. Within a week her blood sugar was normal. She started this right before the holidays and was concerned about missing holiday dinners...my answer was that of Dr. Fung's: have your dinner, enjoy it and get back on track the next day. She did just that and got through the holidays effortless and satisfied that she wasn't deprived of a thing. She remained on her fasting protocol and just had her meal within that time frame. Her blood glucose was higher the next morning but normalized after one day. She chooses now to have one "cheat meal" each week and for 4 weeks the next morning her blood sugar was higher...but got lower each week and after 4 weeks her morning after a cheat meal her blood glucose was normal!
Within 10 weeks she has lost 46 pounds and is thrilled with her progress. Her doctor is shocked and initially thought the diet was nuts but now wants to know more about it...hence why I ordered 3 copies of this book...perfect for the medical mind.
This diet is basically a ketogenic diet on steroids...great for so many ailments and used by many cancer patients.
I started on the diet myself and found similar results with the exception of my cheat day...maybe because of my age, I do not get into ketoses for days after my cheat day which slows down my weight loss. I have still managed to lose 16 pounds in 3 weeks effortlessly with the exception of the 2 day sugar hangover like my daughter experienced. I have since found a product that will put you into ketoses in a day, but it is very expensive and the taste is...not so great. I use it once a week and it allows me to have that cheat meal once a week without sacrificing my progress.
My guess it that Dr. Fung will become villified for several reasons:
1. His plan works without medicine
2. The drug companies will lose a tremendous amount of money
3. No special foods or supplements to buy
4. No added expenses...in fact my food bills are much lower.
5. He exposes the fact that this information has been available to the medical community for a long time and no one has acted on it.
I highly recommend this book and highly recommend you read through all the facts and figures he goes over...it makes managing your weight and your diabetes much easier over your lifetime without much thought once you know how your body reacts to food.
I also recommend getting an extra copy for your doctor because they will surely think you are nuts when you tell them what you are doing.
I will be eternally grateful to Dr. Fung for giving me the tools to cure my daughter and better serve my patients.
UPDATE: My daughter continues to do well with blood sugars that remain normal, her biggest complaint is that she has to keep buying new clothes. She has found her weight has stalled and after some investigation I realized why...she had been taking MCT oil, about 3 tablespoons a day in pill form (she doesn't eat breakfast and doesn't like the taste of coconut) and she stopped it at the same time her weight loss halted. MCT oil...and there are several like coconut and hazelnut, stay liquid at room temperature. They can be added to food like coffee or smoothies, even salads. I found that I can get back into ketosis at warp speed when I started using it. Amazon has several brands here and I like the 32 ounce Viva labs coconut MCT. I found that although the craving weren't horrible, I missed my sweets. There is a new book from Martina Slajervoa called "Fat Bombs" that I highly recommend. Tons of sweet treats that are keto friendly. I will say I hate stevia and it's aftertaste, but found Swerve to be a great substitute. I will also warn you that if you don't use MCT oil in many of the recipes and sub coconut oil in it's more solid form, the results are not nearly as good. The chocolate hazelnut smoothie does it for me...sometimes I sub ice for all the water and I get a soft serve like ice cream that tastes like I'm cheating. The MCT oil helps me get right back into ketosis after my cheat days without buying that expensive, horrible tasting powered drink I was using. She also has a book on ketogenic recipes in general that I found very helpful as she has many dinner recipes that can be prepared in 30 minutes or less. I have taken my blood sugar both before and an hour after eating these "Fat Bomb" treats, (I'm not diabetic) and my blood sugar stayed the same or went lower...that was using the Swerve, which is expensive but worth it and a bit cheaper if bought in the 3 pack as I do.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned this but Dr Jason Fung is a traditional medical doctor in Canada working in the system — where the government won't pay for a medical intervention if it isn't effective. He has helped his patients drop thousands of pounds with an unconventional approach. The book covers the reasons he has elected to take this controversial approach. His program, called intensive dietary management, helps people adapt a low carb diet and intermittent or (when appropriate and supervised) prolonged fasts. He knows what he's talking about when it comes to the connection between what you eat and what you weigh.

Dr Fung makes it clear that the calories in/ calories out model of weight management has proved to be a colossal failure, and explains why, covering the nuanced realities of hormones, fasting, carbohydrates, fats, sugars and sleep and the roles each plays in your health.

As a doctor myself specializing in weight loss, I too am deeply interested in the disconnect between calories consumed and body weight that seems to trap some people in a metabolic vicious cycle. So I find his focus on this topic fascinating. Particularly interesting are the arguments that lay out why we were wrong about the calories in calories out model and how human physiology seems to defy physics (but actually isn’t, as you’ll see).

Each chapter unfolds into a sensible, well researched, very well-reasoned and sometimes sobering discussion of a health topic.
Topics include:
▪ the heritability of (a tendency for) obesity
▪ The role of insulin in weight gain
▪ Benefits of fiber to gut health and how that translates to faster weight loss

Dr. Fung Saved My Life

I actually discovered Dr. Fung last year after being hospitalized with cellulitis and, after dealing two months without relief, I was finally informed that I was Type II diabetic. For two months I followed all of the standard advice doctors have and was rewarded with a higher a1c number. Taking matters into my own hands, I started researching... Which is how I came across Dr. Fung and his treatments. Today, I'm 50 lbs lighter and my a1c is normal. I can't recommend this book any higher. I wish there was a sixth star because it's that important.

When we lost JND Kelly a couple of years ago (he was in his 90's), the theological world, both Catholic and Protestant, lost a giant. "Ancient Christian Creeds" demonstrates a part of Kelly's genius. It is an invaluable resource for the graduate level or seminary student in theology (and was, in fact, one of the texts used in my Historical Theology class when I was a seminarian). Kelly describes the evolution of creedal thoughts and ideas, as well as the development of the various formulae themselves, beginning with the Old Roman Baptismal statement through the Creed of Nicea/Constantinople.
I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Excellent book for the early medieval historian

I am a graduate student in theology and have been doing research for a few years now in early medieval church history, concentrating on corruption and controversy. While recently studying the filioque controversy, I had come across many many bits and pieces about this, but had never found an outline in one place until I came across this book. Kelly writes in a clear and easily understood manner. This text should be on the shelf of any pastor, historian, or theologian.

BEST resource on early Christian Creeds and Faith formulation

INTRO:
A CREED in short is a basic formulation of ones faith.

J.N.D. Kelly is the premier writer in the area of early Christianity (few Church historians reach his depth and width ... worthy mentioning here is Jaroslav Pelikan). Any Christian (lay or clergy) will be blown away by this book, as their faith in Christ and the Apostles will be strengthened.

CONTENT:
This is not a fast read (many chapters and much detail) but J.N.D. Kelly starts our slow enough where anyone can see that he is approaching this topic with an open mind (did the early Christians of the first century have a CREED)? In the end we learn that history does not give us enough evidence for an answer, BUT we can see even from the New Testament extant manuscripts and texts that there are remenants and hints about CREEDAL statements.

CONCLUSION:
This invaluable resource is also used for seminary students and graduate work in theology (such as Historical Theology courses). In this book one learns the evolution of creedal thoughts and ideas, as well as the development of the various formulae themselves, and both Eastern Church and Western Church statements and creeds are well represented (especially the oecumenical one - Nicaea-Constantinople).

I concur with the previous two reviewers that this is a book that I cannot recommend enough, and one that should be on the shelf of any pastor, historian, or theologian.

Coming of Age inside the Well of a T-34

Roughly 800,000 women served in the Soviet Armed Forces during World War II (also known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War): as pilots, snipers, machine gunners, tank crew members, and partisans. Of these, a quarter were decorated, and 89 received the highest honor, the Hero of the Soviet Union.

A number of children also fought in the war. Prior to WWII, the age of conscription for men was 19; just before the war began, it was lowered to 17. Teenagers and children fought in insurrections, belonged to youth movements, and in some cases, orphans were allowed join the Red Army in an official capacity. (Source: Wikipedia.)

In the graphic novel series KATUSHA: GIRL SOLDIER OF THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR, Wayne Vansant shines a light on these lesser-known aspects of World War II.

Refugees from their native country of Ukraine, BOOK 2: THE SHAKING OF THE EARTH sees Katusha and her adopted older sister Milla (“Big and Little Tymoshenko”) arrive in Russia just in time for the bombing of Stalingrad on August 23, 1942. The young women quickly graduate from partisans to militia members, as they’re recruited to defend the women and children still remaining in the city. In an attempt to keep them safe (wherein “safe” is a relative term), their father later arranges for them to attend tank driving school in Chelyabinsk. After several months of study, they’re sent to the front lines to fight with the Red Army, where Milla earns the honor of Hero of the Soviet Union for her bravery at the Battle of Prokhorovka in July 1943.

Katusha is just seventeen years old at the outset of Book 2; she celebrates her 18th birthday on the battlefield. KATUSHA is a coming of age story that takes place under the harshest conditions imaginable. Along with her budding feelings for an older officer, Katusha must come to grips with the violence, loss, and deprivations that are part of everyday life during wartime.

The middle of three installments, I’m having a difficult time rating Book 2: I entered to win copies of Books 1 and 2 through Goodreads, but only scored Book 2. And I’m not sure I enjoyed the story enough to purchase Book 1 on my own (or at least not at the current prices). While the war stories are easy enough to follow, I feel like I’m missing quite a bit of background information on the characters, especially Katusha and Milla, and their time in Ukraine prior to the beginning on WWII. (Um, Milla is sleeping with her uncle? I know she’s adopted, but still!) If you’re interested in the series, definitely read them in sequence from the beginning!

That said, the artwork is above par and the storytelling, engaging. There’s quite a bit of discussion about weaponry (particularly tanks) and battle strategy, which makes sense, but mostly bored me to tears. Vansant touches upon the female experience during wartime, though not in the detail I’d hoped. Milla’s backstory is especially engaging; I’d love for Vansant to delve into collectivization in Ukraine further. I was surprised to see so many families serving together (e.g., Katusha, Milla, and their Uncle Taras).

Katusha and Milla elect to fight as Russians in the “Patriotic War” in the hope that they may someday return home to their native Ukraine – making the series title somewhat ironic. Should they find their way back in Book 3, it will only be at a great cost.

Second of two--so far

This second book of the adventures of Katusha during World War II covers late 1942 through July 1943. This includes the Battle of Stalingrad and the creation of male/female tank crews by the Soviet high command. There's no shying away from brutality but Katusha manages to remain a sweet character despite the horrors of the war she is a direct participant in. Again, as with the first book, this second volume is highly recommended.

Family planning with a racist tinge

Modern contraception is normally associated with an increase in women's freedom. Sexually, it put women on a par with men. But in Rhodesia, before majority rule in 1980, contraception triggered quite a different response amonst some of the Africans. Contraception, and indeed the entire rubric of family planning "was mass murder and genocide, a demographic attack on the African population", in one common view.
Talk about cognitive dissonance! How could something generally looked upon favourably elsewhere take on this meaning? In much of her book, Kaler explains. The minority white government employed family planning workers, to separately serve whites and blacks. The workers themselves sincerely tried to help their clientele. But in the government, there was a vocal element urging family planning to be applied to blacks, to reduce their fertility vis-a-vis the whites. Needless to say, such urgings leaked out to the blacks, and were in turn used by revolutionaries as agitprop against Ian Smith's regime.

Running After Pills: Politics, Gender, and Contraception in Colonial Zimbabwe written by Amy Kaler is a very good read that gives an good snapshot of family planning during white majority rule in Zimbabwe from the mid 50's to the early 80's. Kaler uses interviews and verbatim text to present different sides to a very complicated issue. The majority of the material in the book comes from archival materials (e.g. speech transcripts, newspaper articles) and from qualitative interviews with family planning workers and "common" people that had experience with family planning during the time period. In my opinion the interviews are the strongest portions of the book, although she did have a tendency to be a bit redundant in her attempt to provide the reader with substantial proof that the interviewees were expressing concerns felt by a wide range of people. Using direct quotes from her subjects allowed the participants to have their voices very clearly heard throughout the book.

I found the most intriguing idea from the book is the idea that women's bodies became a hot spot of political and social discussion. Kaler does a good job in explaining the many groups that had some claim of interest or authority over a woman's decision of what to do with her body. The introduction starts out strongly presenting a clear case about how fertility control is much more than whether or not a woman has a baby, and the many layers of interest that are affected by a single decision. She develops a very articulate argument during the discussion on Shona marriages (Chapter 5) the many competing factions and factors that helped to reinforce the idea that women were not and should not be the only ones in control of the decision of whether or not to use contraceptives.

This discussion also emphasizes the second most interesting point in the book, that of presenting black Zimbabwean women against the typical view of a weak, uneducated African woman with little to no power. Indeed Kaler provides a strong case that black Zimbabwean women were actively engaged in finding ways to subvert all of the forces that were trying to exert control over their bodies and engaging in family planning without others' knowledge. Her interviews show the many ways and rationale that women were able to move past the limits that their place in society seemingly cast them. This is a powerful point as it presents a contradictory case against the majority discourse that likes to cast African women as weak and helpless women that need to be saved by outside forces.

Lastly one of the other most fascinating points in the book is the discussion around indigenous beliefs around biomedicine and physical biology of humans. This portion of the book imparts insightful knowledge that can be very important to researchers from all fields in understanding the ways that Western concepts are seen in other cultures. Often biology is not the only or most important factor, but the additional layer of social context in which these processes are understood are equally or even more significant.

My major criticism is that I thought Kaler presented a heavily skewed view against the side of all white Zimbabweans; she only once seems to entertain the notion that maybe the guerrillas were not 100% positive in their struggle but does not spend a lot of time on it. From a historical perspective, and possibly because she did much of the research and writing in the 90's and published it in early 2000's she did not have to opportunity to see some of the public discourse around the political situation that is now being discussed about Zimbabwe and Mugabe. Obviously there were many injustices that went on during white rule in Zimbabwe, and there is much to be said about the many motives of the white regime including racist plans at political domination. So while Kaler may not have overstated the role of the white political elites, I do believe that she gives the situation an overinflated sense of importance within the book that takes away from what is good about the book. In her effort to "prove" malevalence on the part of the government I think she downplays the importance of family planning and contraceptive use, which is surely not her viewpoint.

Additionally, as noted elsewhere in other reviews, there were several errors in reporting on interviews (String around the waist, public thing to see--bottom page 162 & bottom page 170, Granny gave medicine, but actually on the pill--top of page 172 & lower middle page 173). In scholarly work I think this takes away from the text in a tremendous way. If an author attributes a quote to two different people it may make you wonder what other errors he or she has made, and how careful of a record keeper the researcher is.

Overall I think this book provides valuable inside and a refreshing perspective around the politics of family planning in white-ruled Zimbabwe. This book would be an excellent read for scholars wishing to get a better perspective on both family planning as well as the unconventional ways in which African women have exerted control over situations in their lives.

About the Author
O. C. Ferrell (Ph.D., Louisiana State University) is University Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at Belmont University. He most recently served nine years as University Distinguished Professor of Marketing and Creative Enterprise Scholar at the University of New Mexico. His academic research focuses on ethical decision-making, stakeholder relationships and social responsibility. He is a leading author in marketing ethics and stakeholder orientation to achieve marketing performance in organizations. Dr. Ferrell is past president of the Academic Council of the American Marketing Association and chaired the American Marketing Association Ethics Committee twice. Under his leadership, the committee developed the AMA Code of Ethics and the AMA Code of Ethics for Marketing on the Internet. He is Vice President of Publications for the Academy of Marketing Science. He has received the Cutco Vector Distinguished Marketing Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science. Dr. Ferrell is the co-author of 20 books and more than 100 articles. In 2006?2007, Professor Fraedrich was awarded the Bill Daniels Distinguished Professor of Business Ethics at the University of Wyoming, College of Business. Recently, Professor Fraedrich was invited to teach for the Department of the Army at the General Officer level concerning "The Consequences of Power." His class included 13 Brigadier Generals as well as five star generals (two lieutenant generals and three major generals). He is also the author of integrated application-oriented ethics software for academics and Fortune 500 corporations.

Dr. Linda Ferrell (Ph.D. University of Memphis) is professor of marketing at Belmont University. Dr. Ferrell coauthored Business and Society with O. C. Ferrell and Debbie M. Thorne and is co-author of Business in a Changing World with O.C. Ferrell and Geoff Hirt. I feel more ethical already!

The book has good content but I rented the e-book and it does not have text to voice capability. I am getting my MBA, work full time and I enjoy running while listening to a couple of chapters as I feel like I am multitasking. It would be great is this book had the capability to allow that.

Valuable Book for Ethics Course

This textbook had a lot of good information and covered a spectrum of ethical business situations and concepts. Tied together with the information from the instructor, this book was a valuable tool in the learning process for my Business Ethics course. It read well and had a lot of helpful case studies to get your mind thinking.

Confusing and Dry

The text was very dry and repetitive making for a very hard read. I dreaded the time each week that I had to spend reading this book. It seemed to purposely complicate topics that were clear before I started reading, and tried to use that to constantly convince me that I needed to study business ethics. It was annoying, to say the least.
Plus, (although this isn't necessarily against this particular book) the concept of ethics without a base worldview is very hard to comprehend. This book definitely did not make that difficulty any easier. It is probably the worst textbook I've read (out of about 20 or so).
