The projectively telepathic race of Ampliturs has conceived of a Purpose, which will be revealed when all the sapient races of the galaxy are united. Using either logic, subversion or, reluctantly, force, they have recruited each new race they have encountered, then used mental persuasion and genetic engineering to turn those races into allies. The Weave, a coalition of peoples that do not want to be assimilated, has been fighting them for centuries when a Weave exploratory ship stumbles across the Earth. Humans are just beginning to learn to be peaceful; how will they react to a request by aliens to fight other aliens? In order to credit this scenario, readers must accept a very skewed future universe: of all the planets with intelligent life, only Earth is tectonically active, with violent weather and more than one land mass; only humans have more than one language, fight within their own species and are, for some reason, immune to the Amplitur telepathy. The writing is crisp, but cannot make up for the burden these contrivances place on the story.

The Weave, a not-always harmonious coalition of races, has taken up arms in an attempt to pursue its own destinies. Because of the basic aggressive nature of Earthlings, the Weave recruit individuals to use as warriors in their battle against the Amplitur. Hooray for Humans!

I picked this book up off of a desk somewhere during a former job. It was late, I was bored and the cover looked interesting. The book was a bit slow to start, but interesting once the pace increased. I found myself disappointed when I reached the last page because the job's library didn't have books two or three.

What I liked:

The characters were engaging:

The Weave aliens behaved in an unexpected...but entirely understandable way to their new "Allies" the Humans. The "Bad Guys" in many ways mimic many of the loathesome qualities of many fictitious, and real life, antagonisitic forces all the while giving the overall impression of being beneficent.

The struggle was believable and understandable:

The "Bad Guys" seek to assimilate and redirect every species they encounter to the "Purpose". This is a common theme for a reason; humans are, by and large, fiercely individualistic. The Borg, the "Body Snatchers", Vampires, Zombies all have the underlying, if not primary, purpose of "Making you one of Them".

Humans were not portrayed as weak or inferior:

Though not superior in any given area, other than warfare and ferocity, humans were considered better than all of the allied and enemy races in that humans were exceptional, even the aged humans, in all of the desired areas (strength, reaction speed, endurance, eye sight, hearing etc). It was refreshing to not read about "Puny Humans".

What I did not like:

The Main Character:

Though this may seem like a fatal flaw, it really isn't. What I didn't like about the Main character were his seemingly endless crys that humanity wants peace...even when the evidence of our blood thirstiness is staring him in the face. Now, I am all for peace, don't get me wrong, but I accept a few basic things about my brothers and sisters; we only really do two things REALLY well, kill each other and make babies. Were I put in the position of the main character, faced with probable genocide because Humans just couldn't cope with the rest of the universe's outlook on civilized behavior, I am sure that I would cry that we COULD learn to be peaceful, too.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book, I have read it at least twice, and recommend it.

Good despite its flaws

I'll be honest. Some of the ideas in this book are silly, such as Earth being tectonically active alone among thousands of inhabited planets, like one reviewer already pointed out. Never mind how the aliens are completely ignorant of tectonics despite all of their other wonderful science.
The main reason I like the book is because it panders to biased view of humanity as princes among carbon-based lifeforms. I like the vision of humans being the strongest, fastest and most vicious species in the stars, and Foster did a good job of portraying the shock of the other races at this.
I see more and more flaws in the plot as the years go by, but I gave it four stars because it's kept me thinking about the subject for such a long time.

Best book in the trilogy

A very good book, one of my all time favorites. Although, I somewhat disagree with Fosters recurrent theme of humanity's violent tendencies (presented a bit simplistic or naive in a way) it didn't keep me from enjoying this book. It is a great start to the series, and by far the best of the trilogy.
There is also a little twist in the first contact theory. Humans carry some advantages that aren't often represented in most scifi stories. I also enjoyed the switching between POVs during the initial encounters, judgments that are made about each side.

Released in January 2008, The Architecture of Light is a lighting design textbook that merges fundamental lighting knowledge with graphic techniques for generating and communicating lighting design. The 264-page book is the brainchild of Sage Russell, a lighting designer at San Diego-based Lumia Light Studio and instructor at the Design Institute of San Diego. When asked what inspired him to publish the book, Russell says, "Having taught lighting design to architects and interior designers for seven years, each semester I struggled to provide them a text resource that was practical and applicable in the context of a one-semester lighting education." Specifically created as a tool for design professionals whose primary focus is not lighting design, The Architecture of Light concentrates on visual data to provide a deeper understanding of the lighting decision-making process. Color diagrams, photographs, and renderings are used to educate readers about the controllable aspects of light--both electric and daylight--and how they can be applied to architectural spaces. Use With Caution

I practice and teach lighting design in New York City, and bought this book to see if it would be useful for my students. As an easy read for a home owner who wants to learn more about lighting, this book is fine. However, I don't recommend this as a design textbook.

The biggest problem is in the explanation of lighting calculations, which is simply wrong because most of them ignore the distance that light must travel between the light source and the point of interest. We all know from experience that the farther away a light source is, the less light it delivers. When distance is introduced it, too, is incorrect. One type of calculation utilizes the Inverse Square of the distance between the light and the target. However, squaring the distance doesn't produce a measurement of square feet, just the result of a mathematical function. If light travels 10 ft., for example, squaring that distance produces the number 100, not 100 sq. ft. Where would those square feet be found?

The general design approach is well written and useful. However, the chapter on calculations should be skipped entirely.

Great intro to lighting

I am building a new LARGE home and wanted to get information to figure out the lighting scheme. This book was actually interesting and enjoyable to read. I have already read dozens of different books to be prepared for the homebuilding process (I will be my own general contractor) and have found this to be one of the most useful with real information and not just buzzwords.

That being said, if the author or publisher is reading this, you MUST do a thorough proofreading before the next printing because there are MANY typos in the book (I would seriously fire whoever was in charge of proofreading!)

I am very happy I bought this book since I really had no background in lighting and this provided a good basis.

In an industry known for confusing acronyms, undeciferable number sequences and cut sheets, this book acts like a road map for understanding the multi faceted world of lighting design. Delightfully straight forward and easy to read, each of Russell's steps is outlined clearly to help teach a general method for approaching lighting a space depending on your end goals rather then a micro managed process of what goes where in each room. The concepts are balanced with doses of real world insight and finished off with a great breakdown of sample fixtures and their applications. Explaination and illustration of cut sheets, lamp details, lighting maps, sample interiors and exteriors all contribute to the book's clarity. Whether you are an industry professional hoping to brush up on your understanding of current technique or a student trying to get a good general introduction to the field this book is sure to be exactly what your looking for.

Objects as Talismans

I already was an admirer of Pamuk's work, so I had read reviews of THE INNOCENCE OF OBJECTS. From the treasured rocks, bubble gum wrappers and etc. in an eight year old's drawer to pressed flowers from treasured moments; from saved programs to shreds of old uniforms, we all have our special objects that are worthless money-wise but are precious to us. So I was interested to see what Pamuk did with this. The book is not only wonderful prose, it is well illustrated, so we can take an armchair traveler's trip to Pamuk's museum of memory. It conjures up a time past in Istanbul probably contemporary with the pasts of many readers. Some things were different in that different culture: of instructive interest. Some things are the same. Pamuk's exploration of how memory works with objects resonates no matter what your background. That's why Ioved it: It spoke to my keeping and guarding of odd things.

Thought this book is magnificent! Beautifully photographs and emotionally revealing ! Mr. Pamuk is a gift that just keeps his culture and creative sensibilities alive to all who are fortunate enough to all be touched by them.I feel blessed to have been touched by his enormous gifts!

It is a companion to Pamuk's museum, and is an excellent way to expand the experience of The Museum of Innocence. His manifesto on what museums can or should be is noble. As always, Pamuk is subtle, warm, and engaging.

About the Author

Stephen K. Harrel, DDS, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and maintained a private practice limited to periodontics in Dallas, Texas for over thirty years.  He is also President of Texas Medical and Dental Designs LLC, and an adjunct professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Harrel’s research has been in minimally invasive periodontal therapy, occlusion and periodontal disease, periodontal treatment outcomes, and infection control. He has contributed chapters to textbooks and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Harrel lectures throughout the U.S.

Thomas G. Wilson, Jr., DDS, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and has a private practice limited to periodontics in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Wilson has lectured extensively on a national and international level and is the author of numerous professional publications and books on periodontics and implant dentistry. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio Dental School and Baylor University College of Dentistry and has served as editor-in-chief of an international dental journal and associate editor of the Journal of Periodontology.

In this book, Zeev Maoz offers a new theory of networked international politics. Maoz views the evolution of international relations over the last two centuries as a set of interacting, cooperative, and conflicting networks of states. The networks that emerged are the result of national choice processes about forming or breaking ties with other states. States are constantly concerned with their security and survival in an anarchic world. Their security concerns stem from their external environment and their past conflicts. Because many of them cannot ensure their security by their own power, they need allies to balance against a hostile international environment. The alliance choices made by states define the structure of security cooperation networks and spill over into other cooperative networks, including trade and institutions. Maoz tests his theory by applying social networks analysis (SNA) methods to international relations. He offers a novel perspective on the study of international relations as a system of interrelated networks that co-evolve and interact with one another.

Zeev Maoz is professor of political science at the University of California, Davis and a distinguished Fellow at the International Center, Herzliya. He is the author and editor of twelve books and many scholarly articles. He is past president of the Peace Science Society (international), serves on the editorial board of several journals, and is the academic editor of the book series Innovations in the Study of World Politics.

Groundbreaking New Approach to Political Analysis

In this difficult but rewarding work Maoz uses the descriptive mathematics of social network analysis (SNA) to analyze political alliances between nations and correlates a variety of measurements such as regime stability, network density, trade, amount of multilateral interaction, prestige and democratic practice to the likelihood of conflict. Maoz, who splits his time between teaching at the University of California (Davis) and the Interdisciplinary Centre Herzilya Israel, was a student of Robert Axelrod, who was also a major influence on my own thinking.

A possible criticism of the book is that the datasets used in this kind of study are inaccurate and incomplete. Maoz admits as much and recommends further effort, yet dismisses missing figures as likely insignificant. I agree - if the numbers aren't readily available in most cases they were either too low to be influential. In weather models the analysis of stable scenarios using chaos theory shows that one get similar results with small or moderate perturbations in the underlying numbers whereas unstable systems demonstrate their instability with large differences emerging from small differences - one should expect similar results here.

A key lesson that I would draw from the book is that a large diversity relationships between nations on a variety of fronts act to dampen conflict and promote peace. Democratic nations are less likely to engage in armed conflict because of the higher value of other interactions such as trade, cultural exchange and joint endeavors. Dictatorships and oligarchies are shown by Maoz to have both fewer external connections and inputs. Therefore they can more easily dismiss the attributed values of non-State actors raising the relative benefit of military conflict. Calls for boycotts and severing relationships result in simplification of the array of values deemed relevant, increasing the likelihood of war, whereas NGO, IGO and business, cultural and sport connections add value (but only when taken into account, ) and reduce overall aggression.

Chapter Summaries:

Ch 1: Overview of terminology used and the program of the book. The relevance of SNA as a tool is justified.

Ch 2: A good introduction to the mathematics used and what is being measured.

Ch 3: The density and connectedness of the network increases exponentially between 1816 and 2001. Isolation decreases. Maoz bolsters the case that global behaviour can be assessed from data reflected in 2-way relationships (dyads). The concept of SRGs (Security Reference Groups - opposing nations) as fundamental understanding patterns of alliance. My thought here is that this is an approximation, that will have to do for now.

Ch 4: Security EgoNets - essentially the network as viewed from an individual node. What's interesting here is that the formation of SRGs and Egonets appear to affect each other. Democratic egonets try to maximize their relationships beyond what is needed for defense. Non-democratic egonets have less connectedness - this may be due to a lack of trust between parties.

Ch 5: A brilliant critique of modern schools of thought such as Marxism, "Realism" (Mearsheimer, Waltz et al), "Liberalism" (Keohane, Russet, Maoz), and Constructivism/Culturalism (Huntington et al) and how Maoz's Networked International Politics Theory (NIPT) can act as a unified approach for testing theory through descriptive measures. There's a nice discussion of Alexander Wendt's characterization of international cultures as Hobbesian (nations act purely out of self interest/the Realist approach), Lockean (nations seek independence but cherish interdependence - Liberalism) or Kantian (highly connected). Thus we see that each school of thought may be correct depending on the current evolution and connectedness of the network.

Ch 6: Testing NIPT: Maoz takes the reader through a sample analysis using his methodology.

Ch 7: Maoz analyzes the effect of individual factors such as prestige, status and regime stability. There is an interesting result that high status does not have a major effect on results such as UN General Assembly voting. Also a large difference between as state's prestige (number of nations choosing to have connections with X) and status (measurement of centrality in a network) is a predictor of involvement conflict.

Ch 8: Examines the claim that democracies rarely go to war with each other. Partially this is explained by the fact that democracies are relatively rare. Degree of democratization is suggested as a sliding scale. Maoz's model confirms a correlation.

Ch 9: Maoz derives measurements of interdependency within a network. The results largely support a Liberal view of the world as opposed to a Realist view.

Ch 10: Evolution and Change in World Networks. I found this to be a tough chapter with lots of little results. The challenge here is to present observations that might better be shown as animations than as charts and text. I kept thinking of Hans Rosling's presentation at TED and how it might be applied.

Ch 11: How Networks Interact examines spillover effects from one subnet to another, and measurement of degree of polarization.

Ch 12: Summary of NIPT. I recommend reading it while in the middle of the book to regain focus when the going gets heavy.

In addition to an interest in political theory the reader should also have a background in applied statistical measurements and matrix manipulation. Approximately 30% of the book is about mathematical modeling and Roger Penrose's warning that each equation in a book reduces readership in half will apply. To implement his models Maoz has developed his own software Maoznet, available along with datasets from his web site. He also recommends several books on learning SNA techniques. The book by Knoke and Yang looks promising. There's another book by Schneiderman that I might try as well, and it has the advantage of being more hands on.

Keep in mind that NIPT is both new and a work in progress. The analysis paradigm is IMHO quite promising, not only in world politics but there are possibilities in other domains such as modeling business relationships.

I liked the book and found it exciting. If I were a student at UC Davis or in Heryzliya Israel I would take his course in International Relations in a flash. The downside is that because of the use of math and statistics not all readers will find it approachable.
