About the Author
David Miles is Professor of Finance at Imperial College, University of London. He is also an economic consultant to Merrill Lynch. He specializes in research on financial markets. Miles worked for the Bank of England for several years after graduating from Oxford. After a spell in the economics
department at Birkbeck College, he was Chief UK Economist for Merrill Lynch. He joined Imperial College in 1996. He has published widely on many aspects of finance and macroeconomics. Gareth Myles is Professor of Economics at the University of Exeter and a Research Fellow of the Institute for Fiscal
Studies. He specializes in research on public economics. Myles worked at the University of Warwick for five years after completing his D.Phil. at Oxford, and joined Exeter in 1992. He holds editorial positions with Fiscal Studies, the Journal of Public Economic Theory, and the Review of Economic
Studies, and has published widely on many aspects of public economics and microeconomics. Ian Preston is a Reader in Economics at University College London, which he joined in 1991 after a Research Fellowship at Nuffield College, Oxford. He is also a Research Fellow of the Institute for Fiscal
Studies. His research interests are in applied microeconomics with particular focus on household behaviour and public policy. He has been editor of Fiscal Studies and currently edits the Economic Journal Conference Volume.

A solid book

This is a solid treatment of public economic theory as it has developed since the work of Samuelson. The book starts by developing the general equilibrium approach to studying public economics and proceeds to relax assumptions and introduce new ideas. Most big topics in public econ are treated to some extent.
The book is aimed at graduate students or advanced undergrads. For the latter use one would really require supplementary material introducing some major empirical trends in public finance, unless the students have had it already.
The flipside of the breadth of the book is that its depth is limited on some important topics. Naturally different people have different beliefs about the appropriate stress, but incomplete information in particular received nowhere near the treatment it should have. There's some mention, and naturally some comes through in the treatment of optimal taxation, but it's not enough to enable someone to make any sense of the many and important results treating public econ from a mechanism design standpoint, which is a reasonable goal for a book like this. Bayesian equilibrium is not even formally defined. Laffont's text _Fundamentals of Public Economics_ has some more emphasis on this (his _Economics of Information and Uncertainty_ has even more, though not specifically from a public econ perspective). Chapter 6 of Myerson's _Game Theory_ and chapter 7 of Fudenberg & Tirole's _Game Theory_ may be useful supplements also.

I would not omit anything from the table of contents. There isn't anything like this text on the market currently, which makes it a unique product. I like that there are both contemporary and traditional recipes included within the text. The format as indicated in the outstanding features section of the proposal seems comprehensive. I found the listing of cuisines to be very representative of and quite inclusive of world cuisine. This text would fulfill many of my needs.

I think a comprehensive text of this kind would be very useful. I found the Table of Contents covered all the necessary subject matter. This text clearly and effectively presents world cuisine in a comprehensive manner. This text would allow students to see the connections between different ethnic cuisines, the interaction that takes place when one country occupies another and how food is an interactive experience.

This is exactly the type of text I am looking for. The outline covers a wide variety of cuisines and cultures that would allow this text to be used as reference material in multiple classes. The Table of Contents seems to cover every area that I would need it to cover for my class and then some. Furthermore, the way the author writes about organizing the information, a section on ingredients, another on cooking methods/techniques and a glossary of terms will really solidify the information for the reader. I would love to adopt a text such as this. One great strength of this text is having a blend of academic (cultural) information and recipes, and including information on ingredients, cooking methods and a glossary of terms in each section. This is exactly the type of text I am searching for.

About the Author
Jeremy MacVeigh is an instructor of International Cuisine at the Culinary Arts Campus, Institute of Technology, Inc. in Roseville, California. He is a graduate of the Western Culinary Institute, and a former executive chef. Jeremy passed the ACF Certified Executive Chef Practical Exam with minimum preparation. He is the current Treasurer for the California Capital Chefs Association, local chapter of ACF.

Totally Professional and Inspiring

There are literally hundreds, maybe thousands of books on the market which claim to cover International Cuisine. I can promise you, as a Chef, I have ready and studied MANY. This is truly the only, ONLY, one out there that covers all the bases, gives you the info you need to explore and become inspired by the cuisine of the world. This author clearly loves this topic and has put tremendous time and research into presenting it in a way that is clear and useful. If you are an instructor, or a foodie, you will appreciate all this book has to offer. I have tried several recipes and they are clearly written and obviously well tested. Every time I pick it up, I learn something new....which to me, is the key to remaining inspired. Go get it, you won't be sorry!

International? Maybe...

I enjoyed this book but it was not as great as I expected as it tends to be written primarily for the American reader as the weights and measurements are not the same as what I would use here in New Zealand. Ideally being an International based book it would have been great to include other weights and measures. Still I enjoyed the research that has gone into writing this book, giving the reader snippets of some of the worlds most interesting dishes and a bit about their history and the culture that lives around it. Sadly it did not cover my New Zealand cuisine but this is not uncommon as a few books that often call themselves "International" have occasionally forgotten about us as I have found in several of my cookbooks but that does not mean to say that this book or others like it are bad, its just maybe not as thought of as others such around the world. A nice read.

Great Book for Anyone Interested in International Cuisine!

This book is a required text for one of my husband's classes in culinary school. It really is an excellent source for any student, chef, or foodie who wants to know more about International Cuisine. I was surprised to see a section dedicated to African food, since it's not something we see/hear/talk about in the States. I recommend getting this book used, because it comes with a hefty price tag brand new.

IOACHIM'S LYMPH NODE PATHOLOGY Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology

This is the 4th Edition of Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology that was published a few weeks before the WHO Classification of Tumours of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues, 4th Edition. Thus, an immediate question is why do we need another book if the "bible" of hematopathology has just been published? While the WHO book spans all areas of hematopathology, including lymph node, bone marrow and soft tissues, Ioachim's book is dedicated to lymph node pathology only. However, the WHO book deals only with neoplastic hematopathology, while Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology covers both neoplastic and non-neoplastic pathology, i.e., everything a practicing pathologist or clinician may encounter in a lymph node, with the additional advantage of detailed discussions on differential diagnosis and valuable historical perspective.

The WHO book is acknowledged as the "standard" of diagnostic hematopathology and it is authored by many leaders in the field, and its approach to classification of neoplastic diseases is considered up-to-date, reflecting the current understanding of pathogenesis and mechanisms of disease, and the book is used as a reference in clinical research. A major limitation is that the book is brief, appearing almost like an abridged version, and explanations or references to the knowledge it presents may not be self explanatory, and at times can appear as dogmatic, despite the inclusion of up-to-date references. Similarly, because of space constraints (I believe), the pictures are in general diminutive, the quality although good, it is not uniform, and details are not fully appreciated.

Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology is a beautifully done, comprehensive and an authoritative text that provides valuable discussions about the context of lymph node diseases, historical perspective where is needed, such as in the chapters on angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, and histiocytic tumors, where previous versions and nomenclature are numerous, and much change has occurred in their understanding and classification in the last few years. Pictures of high quality are profuse and illustrations with detailed descriptions enhance the text. For example, I compared the number of pages and pictures dedicated to the chapter on angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma and found that the WHO book dedicated 3 pages and 12 (rather small) figures, while Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology used 13 pages and 28 (detailed) pictures. Similar to the WHO book, Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology has been extensively revised and for comparable chapters, the updated bibliographic references are essentially the same, as is the conceptual approach including the use of cutting edge technology such as gene profiling and comparative genomic hybridization. A hallmark of Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology is the comprehensive inclusion of chapters on non-neoplastic disorders, including infections, immune and metabolic processes, as well as erudite discussions on chapters dedicated to metastatic neoplasms in lymph nodes. An additional advantage is that Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology is full of valuable references and discussions of features encountered in the daily practice, not only related with histopathology, but with clinical, laboratory and other ancillary techniques currently used in clinical practice.

What I consider a significant drawback may be more a conceptual than a true deficiency. I would expect that a book of lymph node pathology would be synonymous with all lymphomas. However, several "lymphomas" are not covered, such as the extranodal lymphomas (with exception of the salivary gland), skin lymphomas (although mycosis fungoides is included), and a few others. This "deficiency" I believe is rather conceptual, since many lymphomas do not arise in lymph nodes and are mainly or purely extranodal. Another apparent, but not real deficiency, is that Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology uses as reference for certain discussions the 2001 WHO (3rd Edition) book rather than the 4th edition. However, as I mentioned, Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology goes beyond the 2001 WHO book and is updated equivalent to the WHO 4th Edition, so that the knowledge is essentially the same in both books. I found the index excessive and somewhat disorganized, with some entries redundant; for example breast carcinoma is under entries such as axillary lymph node, metastasis, adenocarcinoma, carcinoma, ductal, mucinous carcinoma, and metastatic breast carcinoma, metastatic breast lobular carcinoma. Other entries are not relevant; for example, "cervical" and "axillary lymph nodes" have many entries, and "collagen fibers" links to a collagen deposition in a case of sarcoidosis (page 205, Fig 38.7).

In summary, the book authored by Harry L. Ioachim and L. Jeffrey Medeiros covers the entire spectrum of neoplastic and non-neoplastic pathology that can be found affecting lymph nodes. The book is fully updated and enhanced by systematic discussions on differential diagnosis and prolific, high quality illustrations for each chapter. I believe that Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology, 4th Edition is truly a classic of lymph node pathology, and has a value equal, but complimentary to the 2008 WHO book. I highly recommend Ioachim's Lymph Node Pathology to practicing pathologists, hematopathologists, pathologists-in-training, clinicians, oncologists and scientists.

Online resource hobbled ...

This hard cover text book is an excellent resource for the practicing pathologist. The online text was great until January, 2011, when Lippincott took down what was an excellent, fast and efficient, online resource and replaced it with a miserably restricted version, which seems like a limited version of Amazon's "Click to Look Inside" function. The online reference text now displays just page by page. It can no longer be scrolled or printed. It can be searched, but its rudimentary search function merely returns a list (10 entries at a time) of every page on which the word appears, along with a 5-6 word sentence fragment for context (no chapter or section title). From that minimal information, I cannot figure out which is the pertinent entry for my query. It's faster for me to get up, get the printed text book off the library shelf, and look it up there.

Doug Casey is an investing beast! I highly recommend this book as it's kind of a foundation when it comes to value investing and speculative plays. Some of it is not really relevant for today but you need to understand the concepts this book lays out to be successful in today's world of Bubble Bulls!

The Compstat Paradigm

There is more to this book than CompStat. As the title promises, the author provides a review of current management theory for public and business administration. A good portion of the book reviews the history of management theory and how current principals form the foundation for CompStat. Discussion of planning for and implementation of a CompStat-like management model does not occur until chapter 7 out of 10 chapters so you have to wade through 6 chapters of history and theory. Even when the author gets to implementation of CompStat, he fails to discuss in any depth the four principals that are the heart of CompStat; accurate and timely intelligence, rapid deployment, effective tactics and relentless follow-up and assessment. In spite of the short comings, I found the book helpful in completing my research into the CompStat model. Vincent Henry details how CompStat came to be, how it worked in New York City and demonstrates how others can implement the program within their organization.

Compstat - From A to Z

Vincent Henry has written a book that is a valuable contribution to the understanding of Compstat.
Compstat was a 1996 winner of the Innovation in Government and has been listed as one of the major contributing factors to the "turn around" of police productivity in the New York Police Department in the mid-1990s.
Compstat has been the subject of several rumors, half truths and outright distortions. In a book whose audience is primarily college level students of policing and police management, Henry methodically explains the organizational context in which Compstat developed, actual implementation tactics and strategies used and assesses the future utility of the Compstat process in a variety of private and public settings.
Henry clearly establishes that Compstat is more than a "dog and pony show" or a staff meeting supplemented with computer graphics and statistical analysis. Rather it is one of several tools necessary to produce effective results in modern policing, " Compstat must be seen as one facet of a comprehensive and carefully orchestrated array of management strategies and practices".
This book is handicapped to an extent by the several audiences it serves simultaneously. First, nine of the ten chapters close with "Questions for Debate and Discussion", which serves the academic audience well but is bothersome to the general readers. Second, the use of sidebars tends to dilute the impact of the author's primary discussion at several points. However, the tenth chapter "The Compstat Paradigm: Summary of Basic Principles and Precepts" is one of the best short summaries of Compstat to be found anywhere in print. Those seven pages make the cost of the book worth very cent.

About the Author
Jeff Volek is a dietitian-scientist who has spent 15 years studying diet and exercise effects on health and performance. He has held an academic position at Ball State University and is currently an associate professor at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Volek has contributed to 3 books, 2 patents, and over 200 papers. He received his dietetic training at Michigan State University and Penrose St Francis Hospital and his PhD in Exercise Physiology from Penn State University.

Steve Phinney is a physician-scientist who has spent 35 years studying diet, exercise, fatty acids, and inflammation. He has held academic positions at the Universities of Vermont, Minnesota, and California at Davis, as well as leadership positions at Monsanto, Galileo Laboratories, and Efficas. Dr. Phinney has published over 70 papers and several patents. He received his MD from Stanford University, his PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry from MIT, and post-doctoral training at the University of Vermont and Harvard.

The final pieces of the Low-Carb jigsaw

This is not an completely unbiased review. Having "caught" a bad case of Type 2 diabetes a year ago I quickly discovered Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars and followed his (still somewhat controversial) ketogenic diet plan, and began to devour as much information as possible on low-carb diets. Although I found inspiration from many places (including Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health (Vintage), and Dr Feinman's blog), the more I read, the more I came across Phinney and Volek.

Their companion volume The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living: An Expert Guide to Making the Life-Saving Benefits of Carbohydrate Restriction Sustainable and Enjoyable gave me the best possible practical guide and scientific justifcation for pursuing a low-carb lifestyle, and gave me the confidence to reduce my HbA1c from 10.2% to 4.5% (a properly non-diabetic number).

However, as a keen runner training for a half-marathon, I had still had significant concerns about attempting endurance events without resorting to carbohydrate fuelling that would disrupt my ketosis and aggravate my diabetes. Despite many hours trawling the internet I couldn't find much quality advice on ketosis and athletic perfomance, and had many questions relating to "liver-dumping" and the necessity for pre and post exercise fuelling. This book answered every question and I devoured it in a single sitting.

After adopting their advice (as predicted) I ran two of the worst 5k races of my life, followed by rapid improvements week by week, which eventually led to me knocking almost 2 minutes off my 5k PB. I can't wait to run my first carb-free half marathon later this year.

It's too easy to say that a book changed your life, but in this case both the "Art and Science Books" have fundamentally impacted my health and my athletic performance.

Very highly recommended.

Not Just For Athletes, Nutritional Ketosis Information Invaluable For EVERYONE!

I am a great admirer of the work of the authors Dr. Jeff Volek and Dr. Stephen Phinney who I am privileged to call personal friends of mine. These two men have done some of the most extraordinary research into the health benefits of low-carb diets in the past few decades and deserve an enormous amount of respect for their contribution to the world. They teamed up with Duke researcher Dr. Eric Westman on New Atkins for a New You in 2010 and then released their phenomenal book The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living in 2011.

As a follow-up book to the latter release, Volek/Phinney wanted to share some important information about how a high-fat, low-carb ketogenic diet is an excellent way to maximize athletic performance by advocating for athletes to get into a keto-adapted state in this book THE ART AND SCIENCE OF LOW CARBOHYDRATE PERFORMANCE. And for the niche audience of trainers and athletes wanting to choose the low-carb path to maximized performance, this book is excellent.

However, there is a section in this book that I believe includes invaluable information for EVERYONE who wants to be as healthy as they can possibly be. Beginning on page 89 in the "Personalization" chapter, Volek/Phinney discuss "finding your ketone zone" and encourage people to begin measuring their blood ketones using a monitor very similar to a blood glucose monitor. While the testing strips for measuring your blood levels of ketosis can be a bit pricey (each strip costs about $2-6 depending on where you find them - See the cost of the Ketone Test Strips here on Amazon), the information you learn about yourself is incredible! Far too often, people who eat a low-carb diet use Ketostix to measure the ketones in their urine. This can be an insufficient way to measure ketones, so the blood ketones are much more reliable.

Since reading this book a couple of months ago, I have made tweaks to my low-carb diet suggested in the book to raise blood ketone levels to the suggested .5-3.0 millimolar level where "nutritional ketosis" can take place. I went into this level by Day 4 (after starting at .1 on the first day despite eating a pretty good low-carb diet for years) and haven't come out since. Hunger is zapped, energy level has skyrocketed, mental clarity is sharper than it has ever been, I'm eating about 85% fat in my diet with no ill effects--oh yeah, I've lost over 25 pounds and counting! It's amazing how shifting the focus to some rather simple things like cutting carbohydrates and protein, increasing fat and exercise and getting ample amounts of medium chain triglycerides can make such a noticeable difference in how well your body functions and performs.

So if you're considering getting this book and wonder if it is ONLY for athletes, the answer is no. YOU need this book and probably don't even know it. Get it and read all 162 pages--absorb the information, apply it to your own life and watch the magic of livin' la vida low-carb become real right before your very eyes. If you're a long-term low-carber and think you're doing well, start testing your blood ketones to see where you REALLY stand. It might just shock you!

Fantastic book with advice for all, not just triatheletes

For those new to low-carb but with some exercise experience, this book explains both how to follow a good low-carb diet in plain English, and also how to achieve great exercise results while doing so. For long-time low-carbers, it offer tips to fine-tune your keto-adaptation.

I think there's a special audience for this book as well - women. Many women who've tried every other diet eventually try low-carb and are delighted with the results. Yet after a time they may plateau. How to break through? Exercise!

But how to exercise when low-carb? Most exercise books will tell you serious exercise is impossible without carbs. So a lot of women don't expand beyond their usual walking or light yoga. This book should help reassure women that endurance and resistance exercise is possible & helpful. It definitely puts the "carbs are necessary for exercise" myth to rest.

How to use your already existing keto-adaptation to your maximum advantage? Low-carb books will tell you that you need to exercise, but they don't help explain why exercise plus low-carb is uniquely effective. This book does.

Exactly how deep in ketosis are you now and would getting more deeply into it improve both your weight-loss and exercise? Drs. Volek and Phinney tell you how to figure this out for yourself with an inexpensive glucometer, which will remove a lot of frustrating trial-and-error.

Finally women can see how dialing their carbs up and down affects their level of ketosis, allowing them to measure and control their keto-adaptation to support their personal weight and exercise goals. The book closes with some snapshots of intense athletes, including a 60-year-old female low-carb marathon runner!

This book is a great companion to the authors' other two: New Atkins for a New You, as well as the seminal Art & Science of Low-carb Living. I recommend you get all 3.

I also hope they expand the "Art & Science" concept to all aspects of low-carb. I'd love to see and Art & Science for diabetics, for women, for kids & teens, for college students, for those with thyroid issues, for autoimmune conditions, for mothers-to-be and those breastfeeding, etc. Writing in the same plain and clear style, such a series could delve into the concerns of each group to offer hope and practical advice.

Comprehensive and mathematical treatment of digital video processing

Although published in 1995, this is still the book I come back to time and time again whenever I have a question about processing digital video. Unlike other titles, it is neither knee-deep in terse useless theory nor is it a book about which connector goes where in digital video. You might call it the Gonzalez & Woods of digital video processing, in honor of those authors' fabulous book on digital image processing. The book is organized into six parts:

Part 1- "Representation of Digital Video" consists of chapters 1 through 4. Chapter one is an introduction to both analog and digital video. Chapter 2 models the formation of time-varying images as perspective or orthographic projections of 3-D scenes with moving objects. Chapter 3 addresses the time-space sampling of 3-D lattices, which is what a progression of video frames actually is. Conversion between sampling structures without using motion information is tackled in chapter 4. This is the task of converting video from one format to another.

Part 2 - "Two Dimensional Motion Estimation" consists of chapters 5 through 8. Motion estimation is one of the most effective ways to utilize time redundancy in video frames, and this section discusses four ways to do this - optical flow, block-based methods, pel-recursive methods, and Bayesian methods.

Part 3 - "Three Dimensional Motion Estimation and Segmentation" consists of chapters 9 through 12. The models in this section can be used for either 3-D image analysis or for improved 2-D motion estimation. The two-view estimation techniques described in chapters 9 through 11 are based on optical flow and are very sensitive to small inaccuracies that are present. Thus the method of chapter 12 uses stereo pairs and motion tracking over long stereo sequences for more robust results.

Part 4 - "Video Filtering" consists of chapters 13 through 17. Video filtering differs from image filtering due to the motion information involved. Thus motion-compensated filtering is discussed in chapter 13. Motion-compensated filtering to reduce the graininess found in most "freeze-frame" images is discussed in chapter 14. Restoration of blurred video frames is the subject of chapter 15. Chapter 16 involves conversion between video standards and discusses frame/field up/down conversion and interlacing/deinterlacing techniques. Chapter 17 discusses a comprehensive model for low-resolution video acquisition and a framework for superresolution of video.

Parts 5 and 6, the remainder of the book, discuss still image compression and video compression respectively. These sections are detailed, but more recent developments in compression such as MPEG-4 and wavelets are omitted due to the age of the book.

The reader should already be familiar with image processing techniques as well as calculus, probability, matrix algebra, and some differential equations to get the most from this math-intensive book. However, the book is very detailed to the point that it is straight-forward to program solutions based on its contents. There are exercises at the conclusion of each chapter, but no solutions, since most of the exercises consist of essay-type questions or derivations. This seems odd since the book is very practical in its exposition, one would assume that the exercises would be more practical in scope. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in digital video processing.

Excellent book but require strong Math Background

This book is really good. Starting from the very first chapter, this book takes you into a very interesting world of digital video. It discusses MPEG video and the technology behind in some detail. This is for the people who want to know how digital video is created and the details about MPEG-2 video. The best part of the book is the Motion Estimation and Compensation portion...... Very high level of mathematical stuff is used in the book and hence will require some good reference books too....
