The Woman Warrior is a pungent, bitter, but beautifully written memoir of growing up Chinese American in Stockton, California. Maxine Hong Kingston (China Men) distills the dire lessons of her mother's mesmerizing "talk-story" tales of a China where girls are worthless, tradition is exalted and only a strong, wily woman can scratch her way upward. The author's America is a landscape of confounding white "ghosts"--the policeman ghost, the social worker ghost--with equally rigid, but very different rules. Like the woman warrior of the title, Kingston carries the crimes against her family carved into her back by her parents in testimony to and defiance of the pain.

Maxine Hong Kingston grew up in two worlds. There was "solid America," the place her parents emigrated to, and the China of her mother's "talk-stories." In talk-stories women were warriors and her mother was still a doctor in China who could cure the sick and scare away ghosts, not a harried and frustrated woman running a stifling laundromat in California. But what is story and what is truth? In China, a ghost is a supernatural being; in America it is anyone who is not Chinese. In addition, underlying even the most exciting talk-stories of Chinese women warriors is the real oppression of Chinese women: "There is a Chinese word for the female 'I' - which is 'slave.' " In an attempt to figure out her world, Maxine Hong Kingston finds herself creating stories of her own, filling in the blanks her mother has not told her because her daughter is, after all, not true Chinese and thus cannot be completely trusted. Can these new stories explain why she had trouble speaking in the American schools? Can they help her understand the aunt who committed adultery and whose existence is denied? The new stories refuse to fall into traditional forms, and the realizations that come from them often bring out a beautiful, passionate anger that practically burns through the pages. Crossing the Line

The Woman Warrior, by Maxine Hong Kingston, captures readers with her own interpretation of what it was like to grow up as a female Chinese American. As a little girl, she came to America with her family. Despite being in a new country, she had to deal with the old traditions from her homeland. Kingston hears different legends which she pieces together to create her woman warrior. It becomes her source of strength in a society that rejected both her sex as well as her race. The book, divided into five interwoven stories, is at times confusing as it jumps around. Nevertheless she does a great job explaining her life while growing up. The first story, called "No Name Woman," tells of her paternal aunt who bears a child out of wedlock and is harried by the villagers and by her family into drowning herself. The family now punishes this taboo-breaker by never speaking about her and by denying her name. However, Kingston breaks the family silence by writing about this rebel whom she calls "my forebear." The next story is called "White Tigers." It is a myth about a heroine named Fa Mu Lan, who fights in place of her father and saves her village. This story became the Disney movie, Mulan. "Sharman" is a story of Kingston's mother. It explores what it was like to study as a woman to become a doctor in China. "At the Western Palace" is about Kingston's aunt who comes to America and discovers that her husband has remarried in America. Finally, the last story, "A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe" is about Kingston's own experience in America when she first arrived. She explains what it was like to be a newcomer in a strange culture. Kingston constantly mentions that her friends and she are ghosts because they are American. All of the people who surround her family are ghosts, except for the Chinese people who live on the Gold Mountain, a section of Chinatown in San Francisco. Kingston feels like a ghost herself, " .... We had been born among ghosts, were taught by ghosts, and were ourselves ghost-like. The Americans call us a kind of ghosts" (p.183). The interpretation of what ghosts mean in this book is difficult to figure out. It could show how some people view a person from a different culture with ignorance as if she doesn't exist. Kingston's The Woman Warrior has some similarities with The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. First of all, both stories are written by Chinese American authors about their cultural heritage. Both novels deal with major concerns faced by Chinese American women. Living with their traditional culture in American society, Chinese-American women suffer problems of cultural conflicts. However, there are differences that make each work distinct. The Joy Luck Club is fiction and is not personal. It is also more likely to be read for pleasure. The Woman Warrior portrays a first hand view of the cultural differences between the United States and China. Also, Kingston succeeds in combining her emotions with her experiences. The Woman Warrior is a fascinating book. One of the most amazing aspects of this book is Kingston's ability to show how silence is a form of communication and how it shaped her being. Her mother tells her to be silent, yet she goes against her cultural standards by talking about her aunt. This act of will on Kingston's part offers the readers her ancestry. The expectation of silence can be simplified into a symbol of oppression. As a Korean-American, I felt the emotions and understood how Kingston felt for being a stranger to a new culture. Her internal struggle to fit into two different societies is difficult. I personally recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about the experience of one Chinese-American woman. It is not the definitive story of Chinese-American women's experience, but it is a very vivid and well-written account of one woman's life. Pg. 209. Challenging, rewarding read

This is a remarkably intelligent, personal account of success, failure, frustration, and identity. No, the writing and structure are not straightforward, and yes, some of the plotline may be disturbing. But this is ultimately an intellectually rewarding read, and a personally emotionally moving experience.
The anti-feminist backlash this novel seems to elicit (e.g., on this review page) should be testimony to how provocative it is, and how many assumptions it can challenge.
As for it being a misrepresentation of Chinese culture, well, it's a subjective account. It's the culture through Maxine's eyes (and her family's eyes); it is not meant to be an objective anthropological study. And I did not find it at all exoticizing. In fact, it's a shame that MHK often gets mentioned in the same sentence as Amy Tan -- beyond the superficial similarity of both being Asian-American women, they have little in common. MHK does none of the silly exoticization that AT does, and at least to me, does not engage in the "Asians must be rescued by Western culture" ideology of AT. This is ultimately a personal, autobiographical account, that is neither judgmental nor self-pitying.

Requirements Done Right

Today we have a lot of different software development processes to choose from. We have Scrum, XP, the Unified Process, the Rational Unified Process, the Open Unified Process, the Enterprise Unified Process, Lean Processes, DSDM, TDD, Cleanroom, RAD, Spiral, and Waterfall. I am sure there are plenty more. Those are just the ones I can think of sitting here waiting on the train.

All the different processes out there have one thing in common, not getting requirements right is their Achilles' heel. Wrong requirements mean a lot of rework at best, and complete project failure in the worst scenarios.

The Volere Requirement Process described in this book can be used with any of the processes listed above. Every process needs to gather requirements.

After starting with some fundamental truths about requirements gathering and an introduction to the Volere Requirement Process the author digs into the detail of the process's activities and resulting artifacts. The authors really give a lot of great advice on techniques for eliciting (they refer to it as trawling) requirements. They have outlined some great ways to interact with the project stakeholders that will get them thinking about the requirements that need to be met. It is clear the authors understand how difficult it can be working with stakeholders. The elicitation techniques account for stakeholders who have no idea what they are looking, to those that think they know what they want but need convinced otherwise, because they don't have a full picture of the context yet.

The attention given to non-functional requirements was great. I have seen some requirements books that mention them but stay within the context of functional requirements. This book has a full chapter on them and treats them throughout the rest of the book as first class citizens. The reason I mention this is, that as a software architect, the non-functional (quality attributes) are what I am interested in during the architecture phase.

One of the things I really like about the book is that it includes the entire Volere Requirements Specification in one the appendices. My one gripe with the book is that you have to pay $55 to download the electronic version of the template from the author's web site.

The authors do a really great job of covering the full requirements gathering process using a case study. They cover a ton of deliverables and they cover them in depth.

One of the other things I found really cool was the Requirements Knowledge Model. It shows the collected knowledge you gain throughout the requirements process It also provides a common language to use for managing and communicating requirements.

The reason I found this to be so cool is that the number one thing documenting a system does for me is give me the detailed knowledge I need to understand it. More problems are usually found trying to communicate a system to different stakeholders than are found just running it.

Overall I found this book easy to read and understand. The authors have a great writing style.

If you have anything to do with requirements, no matter the process, this book belongs on your shelf.

This is a thorough, well-written guide to the requirements process. Really outstanding.

I was initially a bit put off by the graphics in this book, which make clip art look classy. However, the writing is really, really good, and the treatment of the subject area is nothing short of amazing. Unlike other books on requirements that take the approach of a reference book and consequently read like a phone directory, Mastering the Requirements Process follows a case study from end to end, saving the reference materials for the appendixes, where they belong. Did I mention how good the writing is? The reason that most technical books are impossible to read is the poor quality of the prose and of the organization of the material. This is a happy exception to that tendency. I really like this book.

Natural Antibiotics

This is a valuable reference with information on herbal alternatives to standard antibiotics. Antibiotic-resistant infections and "super bugs" are becoming a challenge to standard medicine. According to the author over 70 percent of all pathogenetic bacteria in hospitals are found to be at least minimally resistant to antibiotics. The book explores the root of antibiotic resistance and looks at the value of herbal treatments with profiles of thirty herbs known for their antibiotic properties. Also included are methods for collection and preparation, dosages, potential side effects, and alternatives.

While the topic of antibiotic-resistance can be alarming, I appreciated that this book didn't take a doomsday, fearful tone but instead presents the facts based on research and studies, and the author offers hope with valuable information on herbal remedies. Some of the information is rather scientific but is written in terms an average person can understand and the home remedy recipes are easy to follow. Although I haven't actually made any of the remedies yet, the herbs required are those I can find at my local health food store or online, or I could grow some of them myself. It's also important to note, as the author does, that herbs can have side-effects and can affect how other medicines work if both are taken together. In the profiles of the herbs, the potential side-effects are noted.

Remedies include those for ear infections, skin infections, relieving the symptoms of colds and flu, boosting the immune system, and much more.

This is a good resource to have on hand as a natural alternative to antibiotics and other medications that may not be as effective as they used to be.

Has potential for energetic healers and muscle testers too

A well-organized 468 pages and very good. This is WORLDWIDE herbology, the best herb for the job, irrespective of country or culture. Does not address the energetic angle of interpreting illness as Messages from the Body, but short of that, the best textbooks I've ever seen on herbs for antibiotic use.

The below is a view of this work from an energetic persepctive; that is, what can be tested with muscle testing of any kind, towards solutions for your self and for patrons.

General rules of thumb for dealing with resistant infections

Systemic infection ~ try: Cryptolepis
Severe diarrhea, dysentery ~ try berberine herbs, any
Urinary tract infection ~ try: Juniper berry combined with bidens
Infected surface or surgical wound ~ try: Honey has always worked
Menningitis ~ try: Add piperine, isatis and others are suggested

Buhner reminds of the distinction between bacteria with one cell wall and two cell walls. Gram positive bacteria are stainable because they have only one cell wall. Gram negative bacteria are not stainable as they have two cells walls. This distinction is therefore a possible distinction to test for.

- Enterococcus spp.
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- Staphylococcus aureus

If you like the Starz series you will absolutely love the books

Clean the house, stock your cabinets and ask for time off work. You just want to sit and read from book one to the end and now I am waiting impatiently for the next one! The sex scenes get less graphic as each book moves along if that offends you, just keep reading it is worth it. If you like the Starz series you will absolutely love the books. Worth the time. I carried one with me everywhere I went until I had read the last page. There are little novellas in between to read too. Starting to collect them now. Didn't know that until today!

Destined to become a classic!

This is by far my favorite design book – and I own a fair share. It is a stunning visual feast. Fans of Lauren’s work will not be disappointed, as there are plenty of pictures, including some familiar spaces but mainly new projects. All are perfectly styled and beautifully shot, with the long awaited dad’s lake house and cousin’s mountain retreat leading the way. The content is very well organized. It is a practical guide how to create your own unique and amazing space. Lauren has put a lot of thought and effort into explaining how she approaches design process and how each element of design fits into the big picture. She carefully walks you through the process of designing spaces that work for you and your loved ones, not how to stage perfect rooms that just look good in pictures. All of the spaces she designs are beautiful but are also livable, comfortable and family friendly. This book, just like her blog, demonstrates that she is truly passionate about her work. Even if you are not a fan of her aesthetic, you will find the book to be a great design resource. I read it in one afternoon (it is a great read!) but I will be going back to it as a reference over and over as I begin the process of redesigning my own home.

I admire Lauren’s talent and applaud her willingness to share knowledge and experience in such depth with the rest of us. She could have simply thrown a bunch of styled photos together and called it a day – as many designers and decorators seem to do these days. Thank you Lauren!

A useful field guide for decorating!

Wonderfully written and beautiful to hold. Reading it was like finding a treasure trove of design secrets and tips. Lauren's down to earth and personal reflections were inspiring as well as practical and helpful. My favorite quote from the book is, "Most people in the world do not have this luxury; many have no homes at all. So enjoy the process, and try not to wish or worry it away."

Lauren's book is thoughtful and fresh, and her advice is timeless. Also, the layout of the book is very pleasing--the photos are scaled perfectly, the photo to text ratio is great. Most of all, setting it apart from many decorating books, the voice comes across as authentic, approachable, and consistent. From start to finish it's delightful.
