Kindergarten-Grade 4-After giving most of her money to a beggar, young Settareh spends her last coins on a cracked jug instead of purchasing fabric for a new dress to wear to the prince's celebrations. Resigned to remaining home, she discovers that the pot is inhabited by a pari that is able to grant her every wish. She attends the festival, catches the eye of the prince, leaves behind a diamond ankle bracelet, and is found by the queen. Settareh unwisely reveals the secret of the jug to her stepsisters, who steal it and instruct it to get rid of the young woman. The jug self-destructs, leaving behind six jeweled hairpins that, once placed in Settareh's hair, turn her into a turtledove. When the grieving prince befriends the bird, he finds the pins and pulls them out, thus restoring his beloved. The story is well told, although the drama, and hence the pace, is somewhat subdued. The narrative reads smoothly and majestically and Climo explains her choices in a source note. Florczak's sumptuous illustrations have jewel-like tones that glow against the brownline-paper background, and traditional designs decorate the text. The illustrations are realistic and appealing, although in one scene, Settareh is wearing a blue veil with her face exposed when the text specifies that she and the other women draped themselves in black to conceal their faces. Despite this minor flaw, this is a suitable complement to Climo's other "Cinderella" stories.

PLB 0-06-026765-8 A luminescent interpretation of an ancient Persian tale is Climo's latest entry to her multicultural collection of Cinderella tales (The Irish Cinderlad, 1996, etc.). Motherless Settareh, whose name means star (a reference to the shape of the birthmark on her cheek), has a typically Cinderella-esque existence with her stepmother and stepsisters. That the ignored and often neglected young woman blossoms into a beauty is a foregone conclusion, but here her aid manifests itself as a parifairyin a mysterious blue jar, and Settareh captures the interest of the young prince at the New Year celebration. The lush descriptions of an authentic time and place lend an exotic tone to the familiar tale: ``Each girl and every woman, no matter her age, covered her head with a cloak so that no stranger might look on her face. Then, like a flock of black birds, the mothers, daughters, sisters, and cousins flew down the road to the marketplace.'' Florczak's meticulously researched illustrations faithfully depict the ornate beauty of an ancient land. Life, Love and Jealousy in Persia

In this Persian variant of a Cinderella story, Shirley Climo has used language which invokes the flowery language of the Middle East without the wordiness. Robert Florczak's illustrations show both the simplicity and complexity of Persian art. An excellent pairing of author and illustrator to present a different version of a favorite folk tale.

Kindle version better than the hardcopy

I used this for the FM shelf a few years ago. Bought the new kindle edition when the third edition came out. I like it a lot more. One of the annoying things about the hard copy was having to skip back and forth between the text and answers. Kindle version is easier, just click on the number, then click back. I have had a bit of trouble sometimes if I try to click the number and the kindle thinks I'm trying to change pages though. So for that reason I give it 4 stars. Not quite enough info for the FM boards, but good for shelf. There isn't really a good book for the shelf, this is pretty close.

The questions are poorly written, often do not present conditions well, and explanations are lacking.

Would not use this again for the Shelf Exam. Would use AAFP questions, NMS Q book for question resources.

Good preparation for shelf exam, good for kindle

I found this book very helpful as a question-book to help me study for the family medicine shelf exam. The questions are challenging and the answers provide good explanations. I have the kindle version, and it works great for the e-reader. You can just tap on the question number to switch between questions and answers-- something I haven't found optimized in some other e-reader question books.

Mark Atwood Lawrence is Associate Professor of History and Distinguished Fellow at the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law at the University of Texas at Austin. BB delivers

I should start by saying that yes, I am a BB fan. As a full fledged punk/goth in Detroit during the 80's, I got a free ticket to his concert with Al B. Sure and New Edition and figured "why not go?" and had a blast. He was such a dynamic performer...and that made me a fan to this day. I've followed his career through music, TV, and the tabloids, and I always thought he got the short end of the stick with the media--but it's clearly true when you read the tragedies he's suffered throughout life.

BB delivers the goods: he holds nothing back on his drugs, drinking, bad boy days, crimes, jail time, Whitney, his daughter, and everything in between. It's all in there, and many blanks are filled. He also gives his personal insight to what he was thinking at certain times in his life when the rest of us were wondering just WHAT he was thinking. He even explains the whole Whitney funeral debacle and why he left during the service, and you realize the media did portray it in a skewed light when his reasoning is really very sensible. Now I'm sure some people will argue that it's one sided (duh, it's an autobiography) and of course he'll try to make himself look better....but now that others are corroborating many of his tales in the media (i.e. Whitney's brother finally saying it was he, not BB, who introduced her to drugs), we realize he really did get the short end of that stick during his Whitney days.

That's not to say that he didn't make some huge mistakes--he acknowledges them freely and takes responsibility for most (though there are spots here and there where he makes excuses for certain things rather than taking the reigns on them, but that's OK). In the end, you realize he's just a guy like anyone else, trying to make their way.

Fab read, totally worth the purchase.

Definitely spoke truth

Yes! He has finally told his story much of what we know to be true. People giving this one star and saying he is self serving never liked or will ever like him so pot calling kettle. The Book was very well written and The Break Up chapter was total mind blowing he cast all reservations to the wind and just spoke from his heart. He still protecting her, there are so many OTHER less flattering stories he could've divulged but he didn't. Weeks in Cracks houses, and the sex parties in the home so he was very respectful.

I wish he and his family nothing but the best in the future I also wish the Houston the best and maybe if they read this with an open mind and accept their part the tragedies would cease. You have two other sibling as well as the Daughter in Law fighting substance abuse. This Young Man owned his part in the mess and appears to still be beating himself up about it.

So good to hear Bobby's side of the story. I enjoyed this book. Every page had some very interesting stories. I thought he kept his story about Whitney very tasteful and respectful. I'm sure there was a lot more dirt he could have put in his book, but he chose to take a different route about his feelings. It was just enough for me to get the picture though. Thanks for sharing your story.

Not for boys you want to raise properly. Should have returned it. Too much stuff in it that I totally disapprove of, and would never want my grandson to be subjected to at 9 years of age. Even at 12 or 13....It is really an unkind book. Even my son disapproved, and that is saying something.

Not like the Big book of Girls

I bought it thinking that it was going to be like "The Big Book of Girls", which has plenty of advice, interesting topics and empowers girls. This book is nothing like that. I guess you can find "advice" (like how to insult someone else), there are plenty bad jokes, unimportant topics, poor language, and does not help boys the way the other book does. A good thing is that there are experiments, outdoor activities, and a list of books. My son liked it, but I was hoping for better content.
