About the Author
Born in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies, Anthony C. Winkler was educated in Jamaica at Excelsior College, Mount Alvernia Academy, and Cornwall College, the last two being in Montego Bay. He was also educated at Citrus Community College, Glendora, California. Winkler taught briefly at Pasadena City College and for a year at Moneague Teachers College in Saint Anne, Jamaica, an experience chronicled in GOING HOME TO TEACH (1995). From 1968 to 1975 Winkler had sales territories as a bookman for Appleton Century Crofts textbook publishers, and later for Scott, Foresman. In 1969 he decided he could write textbooks as well as anyone and through a chance meeting with the sales representative of another company, he submitted the manuscript POETRY AS SYSTEM and was offered a contract for its publication. Eventually, he met Jo Ray McCuen-Metherell and the two became textbook writers and collaborators. Over the years they have produced more than a dozen textbooks, most on rhetoric and writing. In addition to Winkler's textbooks, his body of work includes, among other books: THE PAINTED CANOE (novel, 1983); THE LUNATIC (novel, 1987); THE GREAT YACHT RACE (novel, 1992); DOG WAR (novel, 2006); TRUST THE DARKNESS: MY LIFE AS A WRITER (autobiography, 2008); THE BURGLARY (play, premiered in Toronto in 2005); THE LUNATIC (movie, filmed in 1991); THE ANNIHILATION OF FISH (movie, 1999); and BOB MARLEY, AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT BY HIS MOTHER (biography, 1996, with Cedella Booker).

Born in Belgium, the daughter of an American minister, Jo Ray McCuen-Metherell had moved from Brussels to Paris to Bern, Switzerland, by the time she was seven years old. In Bern, she attended the Freies Gymnasium and spoke not only fluent French and German but also English, which was the language spoken to her by her American parents. After enduring World War II, Jo Ray's parents sent her and her brother to Pacific Union College (in the Napa Valley), where Jo Ray received a B. A. in English. After teaching English and French in high school for several years, Jo Ray started to take night classes at the University of Southern California in order to earn an M.A. and Ph.D., which would allow her to teach in college. While working on her doctorate, she was first hired to teach English at Glendale Community College and later to serve as Dean of the Evening College. A chance meeting in 1973 with Anthony C. Winkler, a successful novelist, led to a literary partnership that has produced 15 coauthored textbooks used at colleges and universities across the United States.

Flimsy spiral binding. Buy the complete paperback edition.

Avoid this spiral bound edition. I have nothing to say for or against the content of this book but its binding is a joke. This book is made of 397 pages that are begging to be torn off. The holes are too large and too close to the edge of the paper. Moreover, the cover pages are barely thicker than the other pages. This book will probably not survive in your backpack more than a year.

Of course, the spiral binding makes it easy to keep the book open on a flat surface. If you have to or would like to read this book while holding it in your hands, you can only do so if you completely fold the pages (so as to view only one page at a time instead of two facing pages as in a normal book). However, doing this makes flipping through the pages rather difficult.

This edition contains the passcode for a 4-month free subscription to the Infotrac online library. Unless you need this service, do not waste your money by buying a brand new copy. If you cannot find a used copy, consider buying the complete *paperback* edition. I don't know how well it is bound, but I suppose it should be better than this spiral binding. It costs just a few more dollars.

Impressive, unique, "woodworker friendly" instruction guide.

Shoji is the word for Japanese sliding doors and screens made of wood. Their making requires a degree of skill and attention to detail previously thought to be beyond the reach of amateur woodworkers. Now master craftsman Toshio Odate provides an illustrated, step-by-step, compendium of practical instruction that will enable the novice to successfully create and assemble two shoji projects: the common sliding screen with hipboard, plus an intricate transom featuring the beautiful asanoha pattern. Building on this foundation, Odate gives construction details and nots on eight shoji variations. Technical chapters cover the Japanese mortise-and-tenon joint, shoji paper, and home-made rice glue. Making Shoji is an impressive, unique, highly recommended, "do-it-yourself" woodworker friendly instruction guide.

If you ever want to be deeply impressed with the human ingenuity take a look at this book. The lowly shoji door, is a commonplace in Japanese homes. Not just as doors, but as windows and room dividers. And each is a work of art, put together by craftspeople like Toshio Odata using the same tools they did a thousand years ago.
For the woodworker this book is a detailed study of the techniques and processes involved in creating an object that is simple in its concept and incredibly complex in it's potential. To the student of Japanese culture the book is a vivid tour of the philosophy and commitment that underlie many of the simple, traditional factors of their lives, from doors to teacups. An insight into some of their aesthetic underpinnings.
Homeowners in Japan would collect and age wood, especially for their houses. Then an itinerant craftsman would take up residence for the time needed, building both his workshop and then features expected of him. All the tools he used must be easily portable and capable of work both delicate and massive. For a true master, an intricate door would take a day, despite being made completely from scratch.
Odate combines instruction with anecdote, while the photographs and diagrams are easy to follow. Compared to the traditional way a Japanese learned carpentry (by 'peeking' at the master) this book is a gift for those who want to master the Japanese toolset. For someone like me, who is used to modern machinery and automation, the book is a lesson in humility as well.

Older book, but helpful

I purchased this book (kindle edition) while serving in Japan doing Tsunami relief with a Christian organization. While there I became very impressed and intrigued with the amazing shoji panels and transoms I saw while doing home renovations. I thought that shoji making could be added to my woodworking and cabinetry business upon returning to the States. So before I left I purchased the book to learn more about shoji panel construction and determine if there might be any special tools needed; tools I could purchase before leaving.

For someone with a moderate to high level of woodworking experience the book does not add an abundance of new information. Insight into the Japanese woodworkers mind as to their regard to wood was certainly appreciated. While working in Japan I learnt that most wood items in the homes were highly revered. The author helps to explain such mentality.

General Western fine woodworking tools would be adequate to accomplish the shoji panels. The author does lay out some special techniques and jigs that would be needed in the building the panels, which was most helpful. While in Japan I was most impressed with the intricate geometric and flower designs of the transom panels. The author does delve into that arena with a basic geometric pattern. His instruction really helps one to understand the intricacies and time involved to accomplish building one such panel. However, most of the book covers the basics of shoji panels, something the accomplished woodworker should be able to figure out on his own. Having been in the trades for over 30 years there was not much new for me. But for the beginner and intermediate, it should be a book that would help, should you desire to make shoji panels.

After a bizarre shooting of a policeman and an equally bizarre trial, Abu-Jamal was convicted of murder and sentenced to Pennsylvania's death row. Twelve years later, he is still there, although new evidence has been found to support his innocence. This volume is a collection of his writings, which, for the most part, document the atrocities of prison life. The reader may sympathize with Abu-Jamal's plight and even question his guilt in the shooting but will probably find this book fragmented and sketchy. Instead of a continuous narrative, Abu-Jamal offers brief notes drawn together under one theme. Good prose is drowned by ravings and accusations. One can see why Abu-Jamal's commentaries on National Public Radio were abruptly canceled. The book will probably not be of value to public or academic libraries. This is a revolutionary classic

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an award winning journalist who became a political prisoner when he was convicted for murder based on tampered evidence, police misconduct and determination of the state to keep him quiet. The state failed in that attempt. He has written many brilliant books read all around the world. He is commonly called 'The Voice of the Voiceless'.

He rarely writes about himself, but comments on life on death row, about current affairs, about the need for people to come together to change the world. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to find an understanding of why the world is the way it is today and how to change it.

Delivered on everything it promised .it was real, honest and touched a nerve that made your heart pound. Mr. Abu-Jamal manages to write with such meaning and purpose despite the dire circumstances that he must face day to day. If this book doesn't open society's eyes about the unjust corrupt justice system not to mention the racism still very much alive in our cities.....nothing will.

Not the most brilliant resource out there

There are plenty of grammatical errors in this question set which I found distracting, not to mention annoying. Anybody who has done the GRE subject test or done the practice test from the ETS website under test conditions knows that you must read very quickly and typos/bad grammar just puts you off. Also, the questions on algorithms are ambiguously defined.. Basically I just skipped all the 'wordy' questions as the author's command of English is not good.

The balance of this question set is a little out of tune with the real GRE test. Most questions here are at about the same level, whereas the GRE's tend to give you a few straightforward questions to begin, mixed in with a few questions that require a bit more thought. By the time you hit Q50 and beyond in the real test, your brain really needs to hit top gear but that doesn't really happen with these questions - the questions at the end are at about the same difficulty as the ones at the start.

There are a few errors in some of the questions and solutions; I won't detail each of them here. There is also one question (43) where none of the choices are correct. Not helpful when you are stressed and just trying to make sense of it all! There are better resources I would recommend here, especially if you are short on time. The Princeton Review book is good and so is the GRE Mathematics Test book (but that has plenty of typoes too).

At sunrise on July 24th, 1715, a convoy consisting of twelve ships set sail from Havana Harbor for the long voyage back to Spain. The convoy was composed of the five ships of the New Spain Flota, six ships of the Squadron of Tierra Firme, and a French ship named Grifon. After the convoy left Havana it made its way up the Bahama Channel. During the night of July 30 it was struck by a fierce hurricane that wrecked all the ships upon the coast of Florida, with the exception of the Grifon, which miraculously escaped. Over a thousand persons lost their lives. The Spaniards commenced salvage operations immediately along the beach of what is commonly known today as Florida's Treasure Coast, so named for the fabulous trove left behind on the wrecks, which continues to lure treasure hunters today. The Spanish salvage effort was quite effective, however, much remains to be found, including the dowry of the consort queen, Isabella Farnese, wife of King Philip V. Robert Marx relates this story to us with an incisive historic background, completed with contemporary details known to him through almost forty years of his own efforts to salvage the wrecks of the 1715 Plate Fleet. This edition also includes a complete reprint of the shipwreck listings found in his original Shipwrecks in Florida Waters, published in 1968 when Robert Marx took over operations for Real 8.

About the Author
Dr Jiben Roy is Associate Professor, Department of Sciences and Mathematics, Mississippi University for Women. He has a long and unique experience and has established an impressive track record in teaching, research and working in the pharmaceutical industry. He was the project director and principal scientist of Bangladesh first antibiotic raw material manufacturing unit, Gonoshasthaya Antibiotics Ltd and later on he joined Square Pharmaceutical Ltd. As head of R & D and technical services. He worked with many international consultants and visited many pharmaceutical companies in India, China, Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. Dr Roy has over four dozen publications, and has co-edited a special issue of journal, current medicinal chemistry.

This is an excellent resource in exploring the development of bulimia. The author looks at theory and empirical research through his own contributions and the contributions of other scholars in the field.

Much of the chapter articles stem from the 1990 Ken Psychology Forum.

The chapters range over many developmental factors and consider questions and possibilities in terms of developing bulimia. It's a book that is useful for professionals in the field and as a text book for graduate students.

I particularly appreciated looking at the questions asked and the range of possibilities to think about in terms of approaching answers.
