Simone grew up during the Depression in a small North Carolina town where, thanks to a farsighted music teacher and caring neighbors who paid for her lessons, she was trained as a classical pianist. After attending Juilliard on a scholarship she was rejected by the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia (a setback she attributes to the fact that she is black), and she became a nightclub entertainer, singing and accompanying herself on the piano and, with her skillful improvisations of popular songs in classical style, quickly becoming a star. In the 1960s she joined the civil rights movement and became well known as a protest singer. Then, in the 1970s and '80s, disillusioned with the U.S., she went into self-imposed exile in Africa and Europe. Unfortunately, written with freelancer Cleary, her account of these later years, in which she concentrates on personal problems and a number of tiresome love affairs, lacks the interest of the early part of the book, which describes her unusual childhood and remarkable rise to fame. A book of facts not feeling

Nina Simone is one my All-time favorite artists and to read her story in her own words was quite a thrill. She has led a very interesting, unusual, and adventurous life. However, I found myself wishing that she would be a little bit more introspective in the telling of the story. She went from event to event without really giving a detailed picture of how she actually felt. When the book was over I didn't really feel any different than when I began reading the book, just more knowlegeable.

Nina Simone is great, but this book needed more work

Nina Simone is a great artist with a compelling story to tell. Unfortunately, little of that story comes across in this book. Ms. Simone shares all sorts of details about her lovers, but very little about her music. There is almost nothing in the book about her recording sessions or why she sings particular songs the way she does. While Ms. Simone is very frank about her personal life, I would have liked to have learned more about her music. The book is also confusing because Ms. Simone will spend many pages on just a few days, and then entire years will be dismissed by a sentence or two. Ms. Simone's collaborator should have edited the book better and drawn out more music-related stories from her.

Tortured Soul

It is true that this book is not well written and seems to have been put together on the quick without any professional editing. My guess is that it was written as a means to make a fast buck. That said, the autobiography is worth reading because it is the only real glimpse many of us will ever get into the psyche of Nina Simone. I read that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the 1960s and this was kept secret until well after her death. I don't know for a fact if she actually had bipolar disorder. However, it is evident from reading her life story as told by her that she did have emotional and psychiatric problems. She made rash and erratic decisions for her and her daughter and her life seemed to be filled with self imposed chaos. She was an angry person, was always running from some thing, and blamed anyone and anything but herself for her unhappiness and problems. Most surprising to me was how she was always looking for someone, usually a man, to save her. I had no idea before reading this book that Nina Simone struggled so much with low self esteem, fear, hate, and erratic behavior. Her music is so powerful and she comes off as such a strong and solid person. That is why this book is worth reading. Compared with her music and stage persona, the autobiography shows a different side or Nina Simone. With the two combined, the reader realizes just how complex and even tragic, Nina Simone the woman was. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know a little more about Nina Simone. She is an imperfect human being and this is her account of her life

Best Automotive Publisher Around

Robert Bentley Publishing has created an art out of automotive repair. Their books are the most in depth, real world available on the market. Unlike some other publishers on the market, their books provide you with all possibilities depending on year, make, problem, etc. rather than "if the switch doesn't work on position 1,2,3, but on four, replace the switch" which by the way wasn't my problem at all....(worn out #3 resistor on fresh air fan relay). Consider these books an investment, you won't only save time in troubleshooting, but also by doing it right the first time.

Bently wins hands down

While both Clymer and Hayes publish what could be described as an adequate service manual, the Bently service manual is definitive! Bently has an obviously close relationship with VW and it shows. At 500 pages Bently covers all permutations. When compared to the others, it may be twice the price but its ten times the manual. It really is a bargain.
I've used the Bently manual for everything from minor service issues (ie brakes & tune-ups) to major whole engine teardowns. The manual warns you of ahead of time where a special VW tool (they even specify the tool) or the servces of a machine shop is needed.
Frankly, I wouldn't attempt a repair without it. I just bought a new VW and bought the manual along with it.

Paul Myerson has been a successful change catalyst for a variety of clients and organizations of all sizes. He has more than 25 years of experience in supply chain strategies, systems, and operations that have resulted in bottom-line improvements for companies such as General Electric, Unilever, and Church and Dwight (Arm & Hammer). Myerson holds an MBA in Physical Distribution from Temple University and a BS in Logistics from The Pennsylvania State University. He is currently Managing Partner at Logistics Planning Associates, LLC, a supply chain planning software and consulting business (www.psiplanner.com). Myerson serves as an adjunct professor at several universities, including Kean University and New Jersey City University. Paul Myerson has achieved a perfect balance between academic theory and practical real actionable examples and templates for the reader. The easy read and informative narrative and illustrative style makes it a practical learning and reference tool for the professional beginner, the classroom student and for the experienced lean champion. Paul Myerson's "Lean Supply Chain and Logistics Management" clearly demonstrates that lean is alive and well in the warehouse, on the shipping docks and in the procurement offices, in addition to the traditional factory floor.

This is NOT another supply chain book .. you can actually use it!

As a former professor of supply chain and a current practitioner, this book tells me that supply chain has come a long way. This book strings together topics that are necessary to make lean operations successful. Some books cover at a high level without being practical .. but this one has practitioner in mind. From value stream mapping through metrics, every step guides you in implementing the lean way. The House of Lean depicts all topics and their relationships in one picture.

And there are some unique aspects that takes the topis one step further. For example, most companies and major consulting firms do not recognize the differences between cycle and processing time. And these differences have significant impact on bottlenecks and capacity decisions, and more importantly on lead time related metrics. Time-based competition is the last frontier for companies to differentiate when product differentiation is becoming less of a sustainable strategy.

The book does not leave out the staple topics such as value stream mapping. The examples are clear and shows the value of these standard techniques. Finally, no book on management is complete without metrics. There are case studies in the book to demonstrate the value of these techniques. The author has done justice on these topics as well.

Style of writing: humor all through. Makes it easier for reading.

If you are starting a project or do a good bit of work on supply chain improvement, process improvement / harmonization - this is a handy book to have.

Paul Myerson's Lean Supply Chain and Logistics Management is a pragmatic, no-nonsense outlay of lean supply chain and logistics management for today's globally competitive environment. It is truly a refreshing discussion of the topic without the clutter and lexicon that books of this type sometimes contain.

The book is particularly advantageous for those organizations with lean programs who want to employ cross-functional teams to improve and add efficiency to their logistics operations. Of note in the book's 16 Chapters are the numerous real-life examples and case studies used to demonstrate principles and points that the book teaches. In addition, the book has several tools and aids to be used in group settings to foster learning and development within a logistics or other operations department.

I'd be hard pressed to find anyone within the logistics industry, or the classroom, or otherwise, who does not keep this book on their shelf to refer to again and again, after they've read it, used it and shared it with others. I highly recommend Department Heads as well as University instructors consider its use to engage their teams and classrooms in lean supply chain logistics, without a long drawn out curriculum to follow. This book is a true keeper!

Very emotional!

An opera was written for this story, and it is playing in the theatre where my husband works. He had actually ordered the book for my 14-year-old, but it was I who picked it up and started reading. It's a very heart wrenching book about dying from the perspective of this young boy named Oscar--a beautiful and unforgettable story that will bring you to tears.

The author is a respected emergency medicine doctor who did not seek out these stories, but they were told to him spontaneosly by people who had just been resuscitated from medically documented states of physical death. There are many books of this kind that are compilations of stories by people who may or may not have actually been physically dead, and often they are told months or years after the fact. I think some people dream or make up these stories to get attention or to defend preconceived ideas, but people in emergency wards who are in the midst of life and death trauma experiences are remembering things that just happened, and are not in a state of mind to make up stories. Bucking the received wisdom of the wired elite, the authors collected in Reload: Rethinking Women + Cyberculture suggest that when we log on, we take our genders with us. Editors Mary Flanagan and Austin Booth balance penetrating critical theory with examples of fiction from authors like Octavia Butler, Amy Thomson, and C.L. Moore. The mix can be thought-provoking, but requires some quick shifting of mental gears to follow the arguments from essay to fiction and back again.

Exposing some cherished cybermyths as groundless or at least unproven (e.g., identity is less ephemeral than the utopians would have us believe), the anthology also makes a compelling argument simply by its uniqueness: if gender doesn't matter, then why do these writings feel so different from men's writing on cyberculture? Those readers impatient with academic jargon will find some of the theory tiresome, but much is refreshingly clear. --Rob Lightner

Women writers, many of them lesbian feminists, have begun to explore the relationships between humans and machines. Along the way, they are rethinking how race, class, and gender affect technological change, especially given the growing gap between those with access to equipment and those without it. The entries in Reload 11 pieces of fiction and 17 critical essays assess the ways technology has, or will, affect female life. Take, for example, the notion that cyberspace levels the playing field by allowing users to don whatever identity they choose. According to contributor Lisa Nakamura, "when users are free to choose their own race, all were presumed to be white. And many of those who adopted nonwhite personae turned out to be white male users masquerading as exotic samurai and horny geishas." Chilling as this is, cyberspace remains a positive "place" for many users; writer Sharon Cumberland reminds us that women's chat rooms are often valued precisely because of the anonymity offered. Reload is filled with provocative and often contradictory glimpses into cyberculture. Unfortunately, too much of the collection is steeped in technobabble, rendering it of limited use to a general audience. Recommended for academic libraries and specialized collections only. Women, Cyborgs, and Cyberculture

Whether you are merely intrigued by how women are represented in cyberculture, or doing serious research on how women are being affected by technology, this book is a great place to start. Not only does it provide a wide-ranging anthology of the best writing on the subject, including an amazing bibliography (I love bibliographies), but it also includes a number of excerpts from science fiction books portraying women and technology. Not only is this book giving me a lot to think about, it has provided a reading list it will take me quite a while to plough through. Well worth the price and a must for anyone writing seriously about cyberculture or cyberfeminism.
